Prosecutors: No Dice on Berger Deal Justice Department prosecutors have reportedly rejected several offers from former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger's lawyer to resolve the department's eight-month long investigation into his illegal removal of top secret documents from the 9/11 Commission's reading room. In the intervening months, Breuer has renewed Berger's offer to come clean several times. But in a bad omen for the former top Clinton national security official, the Justice Department has repeatedly rebuffed the offer and refused to enter into any discussions. Instead, Deputy Attorney General James Comey warned Tuesday that Berger - who resigned hours ago as a top campaign advisor to presidential candidate John Kerry - could face jail time. "It is against the law for anyone to intentionally mishandle classified information, either by taking it to give to somebody else, or by mishandling in a way that is outside the regulations of government information," Comey told reporters in Washington. "We take issues of classified information very, very seriously," he added. "It's our lifeblood to keep secrets. All felonies in the federal system bring with them the promise of jail time," Comey stressed, adding cryptically, "That's all I can say about that." As U.S. Attorney for New York's Southern District, Comey oversaw the indictment of Martha Stewart for lying to federal investigators. Stewart was sentenced to five months in jail last week.

Two sources associated with the investigation told CNN that lawyer Lanny Breuer made a detailed statement of Berger's view of the facts at issue several months ago. According to the unnamed sources, Berger has offered to talk to the Justice Department about a resolution to the probe.
Clinton Scandals

Man I Hope So!
Berger is toast.
God Bless America!
"IF" Martha has to go to jail for lying then old Sandy the Burglar must do time for stealing classified documents.
Martha Stewart's prosecutor. Bummer for Berger.
Billzo skates again!
Sandy just may go down the river............or someone's going to start singin' like a bird.
Jail time....I wonder what the Vegas odds are.
We'll make you a deal, Sandy, when you start singing about your bosses. Otherwise, expect bars in your future.
In other news, Clinton's laughing (nervously) about all this.
I'd like to see this better sourced. Maybe CNN will actually do some investigative reporting for once and come clean with all they know. But more likely they will continue to be DNC transcriptionists.
If it was any of us, we would be in jail tonight.
I noticed today that Berger's lawyer offered they were "willing to cooperate".
I feel a lot better now...hope that justice will prevail...for a change.
Things are looking up. Finally one of the clintonoids may pay the price.
If he did it for the clintons, then no doubt he will roll over like Webb Hubbell and shut up. If he did it for Kerry, well . . . it could be interesting.
Berger is going to be Fried.
I'd like to see better sourcing on this, but maybe CNN will come clean with what they know (if anything). Maybe a real investigative journalist will try to make a name for themselves and actually do some leg work on this story.
At least Clinton waited until he became President until his advisers became convicted felons.
For a minute there you had me worried. Right up to the time you came back from Alice in Wonderland.
You think Clinton is nervous? You're joking?
Berger either takes the fall and rolls over and comes out of prison alive, like Webb Hubbell or Susan McDougal, or he cooperates, and suffers a "fatal heart attack" like Jim McDougal.
