Prosecutors: No Dice on Berger Deal

Prosecutors: No Dice on Berger Deal

Justice Department prosecutors have reportedly rejected several offers from former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger's lawyer to resolve the department's eight-month long investigation into his illegal removal of top secret documents from the 9/11 Commission's reading room.

Two sources associated with the investigation told CNN that lawyer Lanny Breuer made a detailed statement of Berger's view of the facts at issue several months ago. According to the unnamed sources, Berger has offered to talk to the Justice Department about a resolution to the probe.

In the intervening months, Breuer has renewed Berger's offer to come clean several times.

But in a bad omen for the former top Clinton national security official, the Justice Department has repeatedly rebuffed the offer and refused to enter into any discussions.

Instead, Deputy Attorney General James Comey warned Tuesday that Berger - who resigned hours ago as a top campaign advisor to presidential candidate John Kerry - could face jail time.

"It is against the law for anyone to intentionally mishandle classified information, either by taking it to give to somebody else, or by mishandling in a way that is outside the regulations of government information," Comey told reporters in Washington.

"We take issues of classified information very, very seriously," he added.

"It's our lifeblood to keep secrets. All felonies in the federal system bring with them the promise of jail time," Comey stressed, adding cryptically, "That's all I can say about that."

As U.S. Attorney for New York's Southern District, Comey oversaw the indictment of Martha Stewart for lying to federal investigators. Stewart was sentenced to five months in jail last week.

The Holy Bible tells us that somtimes the Lord God allows the basest of men to have power. That doesn't mean He allows them to cover up all their evildoing forever. He has all evildoers in His sights, but somtimes He waits awhile to pull the trigger. Ahab remained King for three years after the vineyard murders. Jezebel remained a Queen for 20 years before she got her payday.

Something bad comes out about a Rat. Then THEY leak something outrageous but provably false (like perhaps that Berger stuffed his socks with paperwork and did so five times). Then viewers/readers, finding out that one outrageous thing was false, tend to ignore the whole thing.

That was the modus operandi of the clinton administration for the whole eight years. It seemed to me that once the scandals started, every 10th one, or so, would be a red herring. They didn't always have to go so far as proving that it was entirely false, just create reasonable doubt, demonstrating what they'd do in a court room. This, along with the innumerable scandals (which I came to believe was also part of their MO -- too many for most people to keep updated), would lead the casual observer to believe that it was just too outrageous to be true. People eventually get tired of it all and just tune out.

Beware the sock stuffing. It smells of herring.

I forgot MacDougall, It's hard to keep track of all these guys. I promise I'd remember Clinton's legacy fondly if the SOB would just go away.

How did this stay quiet for eight (8) months? That answer is almost as interesting as to what is still missing.

Looks as if we have grownups in the Justice Department. Probably leaked by Berger or his lawyer so the democrats could get infront of it with spin. We may not find out for sometime what papers are still missing.

The Clintons are NOT going to support the Kerry campaign. They have thrown subtle insults all over the media for months. Why would someone, Sandy Berger - former NSA - take such an asinine risk? Someone with deep pockets. Someone who will assure him that he will not be charged or convicted. It takes a village......

IIRC, Lindsay was Clinton's legal archivist. I think that was how it was phrased. This may actually go back to the impeachment.

This was in one of the original reports yesterday, I believe.

Best I can tell Berger hooked up with Kerry around March of thsi year.

But he had originally been a part of the Dean campaign? A "mole bomb" that turned out not to be needed?

And, after Dean had been safely disposed of, was the unexploded ordnance then placed in the Kerry campaign?

Brings a whole new meaning to suicide bomber, doesn't it? Could Slick have learned this trick from Yassir...???
