Posted on 07/20/2004 9:54:48 AM PDT by gopwinsin04

Sandy Berger has met much of the day with attorneys.

Among those he has hired is former Clinton administration lawyer Lanny Breuer.

Sources say Breuer has been in contact with prosecutors.

Sources also say Berger is stressing a willingness to cooperate, but investigators have not yet asked to speak with him.

Mr. Berger serves as an informal advisor to Senator John Kerry on national security matters.

If he has half a brain, those documents haven't been "misplaced" or destroyed. They are in third-party hands with instructions to release to the media in the event of a tragic accident/heart attack/suicide.

And he's let certain parties know this.

I think you are exactly right. And I'm sure he has half a brain. He was a politician BEFORE he was National Security Advisor under Clinton, so I imagine he knows exactly how all that works...

Maybe he thought he could beat the rap or perhaps he didn't know what kind of evidence the Justice Department had. Normally, the subject of the investigation is one of the last people interviewed in-depth. Perhaps, Bergler got wind of the evidence and is now trying to short-circuit the investigation forcing the government's hand on what evidence they have. His admission is pretty damning in and of itself, which leads me to believe that the evidence is pretty strong.

As far as the timing is concerned, you could also make a case that Justice could have forced his hand. Whatever the reason, the timing is not bad for GWB. LOL.

Sandy Berger is covering his ass.

How can 911 comission make a report when they didn't have all the documents.

But of course, it's just like WACO, they get rid of all the things damaging to them.

Sandy Berger believes, just like Mr. Perry, that our soventy should be turned over to the United Nations.

Possible but if he is on video tape, with "marked" docs, caught in a sting op, he's toast. Although Marion Barry got reelected AFTER his bust smoking/selling crack.

I was of the mind that the leak was a McAuliffe calculation--get it out now, in July, instead of letting the Bush campaign use it in Oct.

However, you posit an interesting alternative theory.

Certainly, the very fact Berger did this at all suggests that the info contained in the documents was explosive.

It was an extraordinarily risky undertaking--and yet, Berger, weighing his options, apparently decided that stealing classified documents was LESS risky than leaving them there. Whatever consequences he might suffer for the theft did not, in his mind, rise to the level of what would happen if the documents come to light.

So now, having failed to complete the coverup, the very same consequences he so feared are back in play. Perhaps you're right. He'd rather take his chances with an ethical justice dept. than with whomever those documents finger.

Another thought on timing. Bergler leaked to the press just prior to the release of the 9/11 report and the Dem convention to portray himself as a victim of a political attack by the GOP. He knows he is guilty, but he will get more public and Dem support by linking his investigation to these two upcoming events. After all, he is a Kerry adviser.

He wants to cop a plea..

Or will he pull a Web and back out at least minute??

The fact the Dems are blaming this on the big bad VRWC leads me to believe they were caught off guard about this investigation

The fact the Dems are blaming this on the big bad VRWC leads me to believe they were caught off guard about this investigation. I am a card carrying member of the VRWC and the board never authorized this! HAHA! I think that it was the ACLU (American Communists and Liberals Union) behind this. Trying to make us honest VRWC types look bad!

Good points. ABC News on the hour did the "timing is suspicious" spin. Oh well, methinks Bergler is in a world of hurt and has got to be hating ever having hooked up with the Clintons...

If he's no longer employed in a Government position, he should've had his Security clearance terminated, without prejudice, when he left that position.

Sure, if the media actually paid attention to this. The media will sweep it under a rug as the final report of the 911 commission comes out.

That will be the main media focus. It won't matter if bin Laden was seen having lunch with Sandy Berger in 1998, the media's sole focus is the destruction of a Bush Presidency.

I wonder if the NY Times is going to make as big a fuss over Sandy Bergler's UNDERWEAR as they did with the AbU Garbage UNDERWEAR story.

I read that Berger was given "marked" documents. It would have been stupid to have not made copies of those documents before allowing him access.

Surely the agency has copies of these documents and Sandy seems to be CYA mode right now.

...and he must stay in the open, out of small planes and be on the boob tube constantly...watch out for cars from AR. :/

As an aside, I think that with the timing of the release of this information, Dubya has just raised and called the Dems in the poker hand of politics.

The dems have known about this since last October. They have had every opportunity to leak it at a time of their choosing.

ROFL

It must have been John Kerry. He authorized it before he vetoed it. Or was it the other way around ?

Berger is his national security advisor ...

I doubt Clinton put Berger up to this. I'm betting that Kerry did it. Kerry is pulling ahead in the electoral vote now. He's not destructing--at least not yet. The polling now shows that he's ahead in Fla.

Don't expect that Clinton will knock off Kerry for us.

BTW, I can't believe Berger was stupid enough NOT to realize that he wasn't being filmed as he shoved those documents in his pants and socks.

It is even scarier to think he was in charge of national security while Bill Clinton was playing Kobe Bryant.

Oh yes he DID! there are documents MISSING .

Marked copies are missing.

That means either John Kerry or his staff have them, reporters have them (we'll consider all reporters to be foreign nationals until proven otherwise), or the dog ate them ...

I think Hillary Clinton can help with this investigation.

Anybody else been wondering if all those FBI files that had gone missing for so long had been secreted in the ample recesses of a certain black pantsuit?
