Berger investigated for taking classified reports

Published July 20, 2004

ASSOCIATED PRESS
President Clinton's national security adviser, Samuel R. Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after removing highly classified documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room while preparing for the September 11 commission hearings.
Mr. Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI agents authorized with warrants.
Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al Qaeda terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Mr. Berger and his attorney told the Associated Press last night that he knowingly removed handwritten notes that he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants.
He inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio and also accidentally threw away some documents, they said.

This is amazing. The campaign has changed today.

A former National Security Adviser who is now Chief Foreign Adviser to John Kerry and John Edwards and is caught stealing Sensitive Classified documents from a 9/11 Commission that is investigating the murder of 3,000 American by terrorists??

Yeaaaa .. I'd say that is a pretty good bet

That would be the finest day in modern American history - the day that our nation went back to the rule of law for everyone. Of course, Hitlery would have to be there as well.

For some reason, Mussolini comes to mind..........

I feel the same. A former national security advisor is busted for stuffing classified documents down his pants. He only has one defense ---- he was trying to impress a girl with an enhanced package.

But you're missing the point: Berger was there to PICK AND CHOOSE which documents from the Clinton administration the 9-11 Commission saw; having no idea what documents there were/are, they had to count on Clinton/Berger showing them the relevant stuff.

Maybe they know something we don't know?

We sure as hell never guessed this.

But since these documents were in archives, Clinton/Berger can't be certain that there weren't additional copies made of everything. From Ashcroft's statement it sounds as if there were.

I'm hoping that Clinton/Berger did what I think they did: Stepped right into the kill zone of an ambush. They were set up just as the Senate Intel committee was. Once those memos came out of there, the plans to set this trap were in place. Berger took the bait. hehehehehe

because Ted is well versed in the art of excusing Death and Treason and still preserve their electability to be re-elected.

In Massachusetts! Ted never was able to win enough votes in the 1980 primaries to get enough delegates to put Jimmy Carter's nomination on the first ballot in doubt. If Ted hadn't been so tainted by Chappaquiddick, he might have either taken the nomination away from a very weak Carter in 1980, or he may have run for President in 1976.

9-11 is Clinton's fault

Sorry, bro, but 9-11 is the fault of a band of muslim extremists who hijacked 4 airplanes and crashed 3 of them.

Were there security lapses and some CYA? More than likely. Were the arms tied behind the back of the CIA and other agencies? I believe they were. But to blame Clinton and his crew for slamming those jets into the WTC and the Pentagon, and ultimately resulting in the deaths of everybody that crashed in Pennsylvania, is a bit extreme.

I am in no means a supporter of Clinton, and I hope the truth comes out as to why we weren't better prepared.

There certainly has to be something going on here that we don't know about.

If this guy took these reports back in October of 2003 and if he returned them within a week, as the NYT story says, then why was the FBI back at his house in January (at about the same time the commission asked for an extension and Mr. Bruce Lindsey started screaming that the Bush White House was holding back Clinton documents).

I don't have a clue what Karl has been doing behind the scenes, but we won a war and are losing the PR battle. It is his fault. He has just stumbled into a miracle. I hope he knows how to use it.

I agree. Pubbies are a little too complacent and too PC. Karl and his folks need to keep digging on the shennanigans of the crooks and bring these to the light of day. No mud slinging; just the facts! Facts, in my opinion justify logical decision-making processes. Then again, I'm a math, engineer, process-oriented kinda 'a guy (drives my wife of 32 years nuts.)

I nail libs just by using logic and reason. Since they're inept in that arena, I've whooped 'rm in less than twenty minutes. Then they go wandering away from the watermellon drooling in shame.
