WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Berger was the kid who told the teacher the dog ate his homework.
That means he can stay on as chief foreign policy adviser to Senator John
Kerry, right?
.
SANDY BERGER was the CLINTON White House contact man during MONSOOR IJAZ and the President of the Sudan's 1990's Offers to hand over OSAMA bin LADEN to us on a Silver Platter before he could hit us hard on September 11, 2001,
Each time SANDY BERGER said "No, Thank You"..!!!
In June of 2003 the 1990's CLINTON White House Political Advisor DICK MORRIS stated on National Talk Radio that it was BILL CLINTON himself who told SANDY BERGER to say "No, Thank You"..!!!
I know beause I was the one who got DICK MORRIS to admit this on the air for the 1st time anywhere ...twice on the:
..'Judicial Watch Report' Radio Show.
http://www.JudicialWatch.org
...All this was passed onto the 9/11 Commission.
.
What? Can you link me to this oil-for-food/terrorism thread? I haven't seen it.
THIS JUST IN -
"I was summoned to the office of National Security adviser Sandy Berger,
who chewed me out for not having a national security adviser.
So I opened the next season with Anna Deavere Smith as the national security adviser" -
Aaron Sorkin
He got caught on camera!!! Someone knew something was missing and tracked it. But the original camera viewer must have been distracted or gave him a free ride. We'll see.
Walking out of the National Archives with any document stuffed in your pants is a felony on a grand scale
Now that sort of talk will not feed or educate one child.
;-)
CNN executives are in a back room meeting trying to figure out how to downplay this with the DNC this week. They have their work cut out for them!
It depends on what the definition of "every" is. I'm sure one of the biggest continuing expenses of the Clinton crime family is the constant upgrading and maintenance of paper shredders.
--- and for us upgrading dictionaries!...
They have known since at least January about this FBI Probe
There is no way in hell they didn't know about it
And it hasn't stopped Hellary from making her speeches on the Senate Floor
Oh OH .. I just remember that day of that hearing when Hellary walked out of the Room white as a ghost
Hey Tom .. do you remember that???

It certainly would be for a Republican.
Always thought that Clinton bought the pad in Ireland for a place to run...just in case. I'm telling you...he's going to leave Hillary!!!
It's pretty obvious to me that Gorelick, Ben Veniste and Roemer should all be investigated.
CNN = Clinton's Not News
If they're not pulling any punches it's because everyone knows he's going down.....seriously down.
