WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Any group (the Rats and the mainstream media employees) that can accept Joshua Steiner's "I lied to my diary" to explain the incriminating evidence in his diary -- a document that was in the hands of the Senate committee investigating the Clinton pukes' shenanigans at the RTC -- will have no trouble cutting the legs off this story. At least he didn't say, "I don't recall."
Coverup and *ss covering. He is expert at it.
Perhaps he was made an offer he couldn't refuse.
Bush Aides Block Clinton's Papers From 9/11 PanelI wonder if this is relevant. The general counsel of Mr. Clinton's presidential foundation, Bruce Lindsey, who was his deputy White House counsel, said in an interview that he was concerned that the Bush administration had applied a "very legalistic approach to the documents" and might have blocked the release of material that would be valuable to the commission.
Mr. Lindsey said he first complained to the commission in February after learning from the archives that the Bush administration had withheld so many documents.
"I voiced a concern that the commission was making a judgment on an incomplete record," he said. "I want to know why there is a 75 percent difference between what we were ready to produce and what was being produced to the commission."
Lindsey is Clinton's BAG MAN!!!!
More likely what did Berger have to lose if he refused? Someone obviously had Sandy by the short hairs. Or maybe Berger saw On'Neill getting away with something similar and figured he, Berger, could too.
Why do I feel a name missing from this story? Sid Blumenthal.
Great work, The key is Zarqawi, that is the tie they might be trying to cover up, he is also linked to the Cole attack as well
One would think that a phone call to Lindsey would be the sweetest revenge.
Well, look, Maggie, what I happen to find this very week:
John Edwards Advisors:
Ron Asmus senior trans-atlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States
Sandy Berger national security advisor under Clinton
Kurt Campbell deputy assistant secretary of defense under Clinton
Larry Diamond senior fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University
Richard Holbrooke ambassador to the United Nations under Clinton
Michael McFaul senior fellow at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University
I'm trying so hard to stay humble but you're making it very difficult. LOL.
yeah...HUH????
I maintain that from the time he requested permission to review the documents, he was being watched. I also surmise that special steps were taken (like changing which employees observed and handled the video tape) so that Berger couldn't get any inside help. Perhaps the "inside help" decided national security in a time of war was more important than covering up for the Clintonistas.
Maybe so but WHY was Berger willing to do something this risky? Must have been a very compelling reason. mmmmmmm
But isn't it interesting that Toon made Lindsey his legal archival rep.? Wonder when that occurred? If this was something Toon had been planning for quite a while? And if Lindsey was called, was he required to inform anyone? And if so, did Lindsey do it in a timely fashion and in a completely forthcoming way?
This is one of the problems of FR, IMO.
We are WAY ahead of this story......and now we will have to sit here and wait for "them" to catch up!!!!!
ON another reading, there are his personal notes, contemperaneous to the viewing.
But why not just put them in his leather folder?
Hey maybe the man just likes the "feel of leather".
Is that why they called Bruce Lindsey? Because they knew he would contact the "correct" people to help "lose" the other copies? I hope they have Lindsey captured in this sting also. He should be in jail along with the Clintons.
