AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.
Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.
"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.
Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.
The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.
When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Now what is it the Clintons always say, "There's absolutely NO proof that that occurred?"
Well, well.
This news came at an interesting time, didn't it? This is certainly going to impact the legitimacy the Dems hoped to give the release of the Commission's report on Thursday.
I want names.
I want the names of all that left those documents unprotected. All those that knew about what occured.
WE are supposed to entrust our national security to these people when they cannot even be trusted with these documents?
WHY do this? Gorelick and the media were there to protect the Clintons. What exactly was in those papers that they couldn't even count on those loyal corners to hide?
Sort of like "With all due respect....."
Church Lady voice in my head, "How con-veeeen-ient"
When did Berger remove these docs???
Before or after the 9-11 comm. looked at them?
Surely the report won't be released as is!
If Gore was President, there would be no criminal investigation of Berger or any other Democrat scumbag. I can't begin to imagine what the Clintons shredded on their way out the door. So now Berger (and who knows who else) is scurring back like a mouse to pick up the stuff they forgot. Unbelievable.
Any prayer that any of this gets mentioned on Nightline?
Why would he need TWO OR THREE COPIES of the same report?

(SNIP)
In recent weeks Kerry has been trying hard to sharpen up his act, but so far the results have not been encouraging. As America's first war-hero candidate since John F Kennedy, he ought to be leading the national discussion on what went wrong in Iraq. But for his current series of speeches on national security issues, he rounded up a series of experienced hair-splitters from the Clinton years - Richard C Holbrooke, James Rubin, Sandy Berger - and they produced a script that would have played very well before the Council on Foreign Relations.
LOL! "KETCHUP BOY'S BERGER IS COOKED". . .
He reviewed them before his appearance.
I didn't hear about that, but it does sound like it'd make a great video :)
I'll bet you're right OF,..they've got him on video doing the dirty deed ! He must have been desperate to remove those documents.
The above statement alone is the set up for a "I don't recall" rebuttal if fully probed for an answer.
Cohen: "Don't tell me about Osama. Time to party."
Clinton: "My mouth is sealed while I am in sexual Congress --- because I can.
Time to party."
Albright: "I will not watch our Commerce and Security secrets going to China, and to our other enemies."
Burglar: "I am the evil one. The one who will destroy any and all federal documents
to protect my masters --- because I can."
"This is a very sloppy move, and one which smacks of desperation."
Agree. Suppression of these documents must be very important to someone.
I'm amazed that Berger may have actually thought he could get away with this.
The Legacy Continues
At the level that Sandy was looking at in the files I doubt that the documents were only CONFIDENTIAL. More likely they were TOP SECRET/Sensitive Compartmental Information with multiple caveats after the TS/SCI to restrict even more who could see or handle them.
The boy could be in some very serious trouble. Deal time?
ROTFL!!
