AP: Clinton Adviser Probed in Terror Memos

By JOHN SOLOMON

WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.

When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Mark Levin: This is why Berger stole the documents and 'lost' them

This should be a very, very big deal, and the Democrats will attempt to do everything possible to kill it. It's big because it is a crime to destroy government property, including classified documents, and to obstruct a government investigation (9/11 investigation). The information that was destroyed, to the extent we know about it thanks to Ashcroft's testimony, most likely showed the extent to which the Clinton administration failed to adopt recommended policies to fight terrorism. And my guess is that some of those recommendations must have had some relevance to stopping what would become 9/11, otherwise Berger would not have risked everything to get to them. Have a good night.

You're on target. It's fodder. Even if it was a slam dunk, the GOP would fold it away and ignore it for the sake of the "new tone".

Face it, we have no leaders any longer. I do like the idea of being "nice" to a point, but not when dealing with the total a-holes on the left in Congress and the press. They should be treated as the enemy and fought with nuke tactics.

But not with Frist and Hasteret as our "leaders". And to think I volunteered for Frist twice.

He's nt an archives employee but.... he was definitely having a bad day.

NOVEMBER 7, 2003 Friday : (WASHINGTON, DC : STATE DEPT EMPLOYEE JOHN KOKAL FOUND DEAD OUTSIDE AGENCY HEADQUARTERS) — A State Department employee was found dead outside the agency headquarters in Washington, D.C., Friday around 5 p.m., Fox News has confirmed. State Department sources told The Washington Post that John Kokal worked in a unit that dealt with intelligence and research. Sources said he handled classified documents regularly but was not involved in intelligence analysis. Police said the official cause and manner of death is to be determined by the D.C. medical examiner, the Post reported. Fox News has confirmed that Kokal, 58, did work for the State Department Intelligence and Research Bureau, but has not yet confirmed that the body is that of Kokal. Fire Department Spokesman Alan Etter said the man, a white male, was wearing a dress shirt, tie and slacks, but was not wearing shoes nor a suit jacket. He was found lying in the bottom of a concrete window well near 23rd and D streets, about eight stories below the top of the building. The well drops about 20 feet from ground level. The department is in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of the District of Columbia. It was not yet known whether the employee jumped or fell. Firemen told Fox News that the D.C. police were handling the investigation and that the death could possibly be a homicide and that the body would not be immediately removed.- "State Dept. Worker Found Dead Outside Agency," Fox News , 11/08/03

Would you like to make a gentleman's bet?

I will bet that Bill Clinton is implicated in the "Oil for Food" scandal!

That would explain Paul Bremer withholding the Documents from the Senate Investigating Committee he did.

I think we will find out that the Clinton Administration was aware of the corruption in this program and benefited from it somehow

I'm way late getting into this, busy day. But right off the bat...."he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report."

Takes this out of the "oops, sorry, an accident, won't happen again..." category!

Toast the little creep.......

Following the failed Millennium bomb plot the FBI and RCMP tracked Ressams' Canadian roommate, Muhammad Aich, to a safehouse in Dublin, Ireland. The Garda (National police) picked up Aich and four others. Over the protest of the FBI all were released within 48 hours (Aich split for Afganistan), "they had committed no crime on Irish soil". I doubt that they would have been released had not someone in Washington signed off. FBI/CIA conflict?

"If it was intentional, and it sure seems so from the first information we have, it's possible Berger wanted to give the Kerry campaign or possibly someone in the media the documents for some reason."

Maybe the Kerry campaign so he could use them to wrest control of the dem party from the Clintons and MacAuliffe.

I think we will find out that the Clinton Administration was aware of the corruption in this program and benefited from it somehow.

Who cares? Nothing else made a difference. The vast majority of Americans are too stupid to even understand this issue. Heck, the vast majority of Americans are too stupid to wipe their butts without instructions.

Bill or Hillary could go into an elementary school, like Columbine, and shoot and kill dozens of children under the age of 14 and the left, CNN, Newsweek, Time, NYTimes, LATimes, MSNBC, etc. would portray it as a social program. Wake up. There is only one way to defeat these monsters and it isn't at the ballot booth.

Carter Legacy: BORING
It seemed to be an era when nobody gave a hoot about the Presidency.

Were you there? It was anyting but boring. Sitting in gas lines for hours on end and suffering with double digit inflation and interest rates and unemploytment was not very boring. Carter was boring, but his policies were devastating.

That's the most sensible thing I've read in all of these threads. That's exactly the way that kind of info is used, not unlike the oil-for-food intel being used to strong-arm France, Germany, and Russia into signing onto the recent UN resolution recognizing the new Iraq government.
