WASHINGTON - President Clinton (news - web sites)'s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a criminal investigation after admitting he removed highly classified terrorism documents from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.

Berger's home and office were searched earlier this year by FBI (news - web sites) agents armed with warrants. Some drafts of a sensitive after-action report on the Clinton administration's handling of al-Qaida terror threats during the December 1999 millennium celebration are still missing.

Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed handwritten notes he had taken from classified anti-terror documents he reviewed at the National Archives by sticking them in his jacket and pants. He also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio, they said.

"I deeply regret the sloppiness involved, but I had no intention of withholding documents from the commission, and to the contrary, to my knowledge, every document requested by the commission from the Clinton administration was produced," Berger said in a statement to the AP.

Berger served as Clinton's national security adviser for all of the president's second term and most recently has been informally advising Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites). Clinton asked Berger last year to review and select the administration documents that would be turned over to the commission.

The FBI searched Berger's home and office with warrants earlier this year after employees of the National Archives told agents they believed they witnessed Berger put documents into his clothing while reviewing sensitive Clinton administration papers, officials said.

When asked, Berger said he returned some of the classified documents, which he found in his office, and all of the handwritten notes he had taken from the secure room, but said he could not locate two or three copies of the highly classified millennium terror report.

Nah...this won't turn a number of states. States (like mine) don't mind at all if RATS commit crimes...they'll think they're morons for getting caught, but they believe, to mix a religious metaphore with a RAT (which doesn't really work) that George W. Bush is the direct incarnation of the devil. And anything...absolutely anything up to and including cold blooder murder in public or nuking New York City is worth it to wrest power from him. In some places, like my state, Bush is hated with so much intensity that absolutely nothing on heaven or earth would make any difference. They already know their party leaders are corrupt criminals -- and they support that.

Bush will win easy -- but there are some states that won't go Republican even if Hitler himself were on the RAT ticket.

I think this deal is a little more serious than Slick Willy lying about soiling an Intern. We are talking about Intel failures that resulted in the deaths of 3,000 Americans on 9/11 and the overthrow of two Regimes who supported and harbored the Terrorists organizations who carried out the attacks.

Can you imagine what must be going through the minds of some of those who have been drinking the Clinton Kool-Aid and believing that he did everything he could to fight terrorism, only to find out he instructed his former National Security Adviser to go to the National Archives and remove any and all documents he could in order to hide his dereliction of duty?

(CBS/AP) Law enforcement sources tell CBS News that Sandy Berger, who was the Clinton administration's National Security Adviser, is under criminal investigation for mishandling classified information he used to prepare for the 9/11 Commission hearings.

The sources say Berger, who was reviewing documents at the request of former President Clinton, is accused of improperly removing copies of classified documents and handwritten notes he made while viewing materials in a secure room at the National Archives.
