A strong earthquake occurred at 08:01:48 (UTC) on Monday, July 19, 2004. The magnitude 6.3 event has been located in the VANCOUVER ISLAND, CANADA REGION. (This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.)

STRASBOURG (AFP) - A major earthquake, measuring 6.2 points on the Richter scale, hit Vancouver Island off the Pacific coast of Canada, a French seismological institute reported.
The epicentre of the earthquake was at 49.69 degrees North and 126.90 degrees West, about 300 kilometres (190 miles) northwest of Vancouver city, the Strasbourg-based Observatory of Science and the Earth said in a statement..." (End Yahoo.com News Excerpt)

That is surprising. Also I was amazed to just now find this story so late in the day. That's a quake that could do much damage in populated areas.

I see Vacouver Island from my house (on Whidbey Is), but felt no earthquake.
Now I see that it was earlier in the day. I wonder if it is related to the Oregon Shakers off the coast a few weeks ago.

Map indicates it centers on the northwest area of the island, well away from Victoria.
I seem to recall the length from south to north of the island is around 200+ miles.
A cousin of mine lives in Victoria, and I have visited this beautiful part of God's planet. Hope nobody got hurt.

Seeing as this happened this morning I doubt any Tsunami as we would have heard of that. And Tsunamis only cause problems near land - not open waters if your friend was out on the water.

July 15 05:06am PDT (12:06UT): A magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred 40 km west off Nootka Island, just off the west coast of Vancouver Island. It was felt by residents on northern and central Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and by a few in greater Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. The largest aftershock was M=3.6 at 06:55 PDT July 15. The ETS event predicted for spring/summer 2004 is now underway. Since Thursday, July 8 tremor has been observed on seismographs on southern Vancouver Island and in northern Washington State. Slip has been confirmed by GPS observations.

Thanks for asking. We're in Southern California but I've been keeping an eye on these quakes up North for the obvious reasons. Right now we've got wild fires, smoke and we're in the midst of a very hot Summer.
Also some believe that the larger earthquakes down here seem to occur coincidentally when the weather is hot. Not me, though. /uncross fingers
