ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards pledged from the pulpit of a black church on Sunday that the party will work hard to head off the kind of Florida ballot irregularities that Democrats assert gave the White House to George W. Bush.
"We will get voters registered. We will get voters mobilized. We will get voters to the polls," the North Carolina senator told the congregation of St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church.
A scant 537 votes delivered Florida and the presidency to Bush after a protracted legal battle resolved by the Supreme Court.
The race seems as close this year as then, and both parties have been working hard to prevail and win the state's 27 electoral votes.
"The eyes of the world will be on Florida again this year," said AME Church Bishop McKinley Young in introducing Edwards.
In five days of solo campaigning, Edwards had been reaching out to minorities Hispanics in Southern California, blacks here as well as attending a round of fund-raisers in an effort to raise as much last-minute money as possible before the Democratic National Convention next week.
Blacks, who as a group voted overwhelmingly for Democrat Al Gore in 2000, say they were disproportionately affected by the 2000 election abuses, including the failure to count thousands of votes, many of them in black neighborhoods.
"We will get voters to the polls. We're going to make sure that all those voters that go to the polls and cast their votes, that their votes are counted this time," Edwards said to applause and shouts of approval from about 700 parishioners.
Edwards later attended fund-raisers here and in Hollywood, Fla. He was flying later Sunday to his hometown of Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday night
Actually, it would be fun to go down to Florida and see if one could still manage to screw up one's vote. Road trip, anyone?
It's "all legal votes" John, not "all votes". You being a lawyer and all, I'd assume you'd know this.
EXCEPT Ralph Nader's, David Cobb's, Leonard Peltier's, Walt Brown's, Bill Van Auken's, Róger Calero's, John Parker's, and ANY other leftist candidate NOT running as a Democrat. Those votes MUST be prevented from being cast in the first place, or thrown out on a technicality, or better yet, counted as part of Kerry's total.
Only by disenfranchising people who step off the RAT plantation can we ensure that every KERRY vote counts!

I don't suppose that an elected senator campaigning from the pulpit of a church could possibly be confused with a violation of the church and state theory could it? Nah!
Make sure ya get 'em to the CORRECT polling station this time, cause even Jesus can't vote if he's at the wrong polling station.
It does help to be able to read - or at least recognize symbols. Something the dems ought to consider before they bring busloads of criminals, thugs, parolees, and homeless hoping they can understand a butterfly ballot. With these new touch-screens it really will compound the difficulties of the nimble-minded dem has-beens congregating around FL polling stations looking for a beer or pack of smokes.
That better mean all Military votes too Pretty Boy!
All this talk about counting votes, and UN overseerers is just so when we win Florida, they can say, "see, we told you so and start the legal process and we'll actually be ready for it." IT's all a PR campaign.
Where are those separation of church and state groups now?
Paging Mr. Lynn, paging Mr. Barry Lynn. After you have hounded Jerry Falwell, would you please report to this church in Florida to challenge their tax-exempt status? Oh...I forgot...this is a church supporting the demonRAT candidate, so you can ignore this page.
Its not a PR Campaign , its a hate campaign. The Democrats are stirring the hatred by telling lies and half truths. If the Democrats lose this time I would not be surprised to find them getting violent. They have all this hatred stored up since the last election. It is all the Kerry campaign has, Any fool can see Kerry is not fit to be president, even the Democrat fools, hatred is getting them campaign money in unprecedented amounts,a dn free liberal bias in the papers are trying to shove Kerry down our throats, only the true Patriot voting in unprecedented numbers can beat this campaign of hatred.
how about military votes? are they going to count? or do you have to be a felon to cast a vote in florida?
including absentee military votes?
Where is that pansy who was raking conservative churches over the coals, for hosting Republicans?
