Fair or Fowl? (Pam Anderson takes issue with Little E & KFC, but is her PETA in bed with ALF?)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Friday, July 16, 2004

"When you take a multimillion-dollar endorsement from a company, you must also take some responsibility for the company's practices."

So wrote Pamela Anderson, rapping NASCAR's Dale Earnhardt Jr. for his sponsorship of KFC. The busty "Baywatch" and "Stripperella" star -- whose Web site declares her "the millennium's most recognizable icon" -- complains that the food chain's suppliers are scalding chickens alive. And she has put her celebrity to work for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which features her on billboards now going up as part of the anti-KFC campaign.

We can understand why the artificially augmented star might identify with unnaturally buxom factory-farmed hens. But the Center for Consumer Freedom, a restaurant industry-backed nonprofit, raises a good question: As long as we're talking about celebrity responsibility, what about Ms. Anderson's own connections with an organization that The New Yorker magazine characterized as "the most successful radical group in America"?

The issue is PETA's relationship with the Animal Liberation Front, which FBI officials have called one of America's two most serious domestic terror threats. Just last week, for example, Brigham Young University suffered an arson attack, the third act of vandalism since May. In an e-mail to the Salt Lake Tribune, ALF claimed responsibility and vowed more attacks unless the university ceases animal testing.

Notwithstanding claims by PETA leader Ingrid Newkirk that her organization is not violent, her defense of ALF is not merely rhetorical: It included $45,000 for the legal defense of an ALF arsonist accused (and ultimately convicted) of torching a Michigan State research lab.

Then there's Ms. Anderson's inconsistency when it comes to animal testing. PETA's position is clear. As Ms. Newkirk told ABC's John Stossel on camera last year: "It's totally immoral, and I would no more experiment on my neighbor's child than experiment on an animal."

That ought to be of interest to Ms. Anderson, who suffers from Hepatitis C, a virus that puts her at high risk for liver disease and liver cancer. The American Liver Foundation believes that animal testing is essential for finding a cure, and Ms. Anderson herself served in 2002 as grand marshal for an American Liver Foundation fund-raiser. Must have left her PETA T-shirt at home that day.

Try doing a search for Pam Anderson and see if you can find one postable photo. I couldn't.

As for KFC, it says that the PETA charges about cruelty are "false and duplicitous" and that it is more than willing to debate what it says is its industry-leading animal-welfare policies. But not with PETA. As a representative for its parent company testified in Congress recently, KFC views PETA's harassment of its officials at their homes and churches, not to mention its rhetoric applauding the bombing of fast-food stores, as a campaign of "corporate terror."

If KFC and Mr. Earnhardt are to be held accountable for their associates, what about PETA and Ms. Anderson?

On the other hand, she and Kid Rock did entertain the troops. I give her that much credit.

Yep, she did go to entertain the troops, and she should be given credit for it, and I do.

Doesn't change the fact she's a dumb blonde with STD....which as I recall she blamed on her ex husband, which was subsequently disproved.

I don't think she knows to this day who exactly infected her with hepatitis. That alone speaks volumes in my opinion.

Thank you for the example of an un-postable photo.

Maybe we should, um, see more examples of these pictures, you know, for educational purposes.
