John Edwards' brother wanted on drunk-driving charge

(FUQUAY-VARINA) -- The News and Observer of Raleigh reports that the younger brother of Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards is wanted in Colorado for failing to appear on a drunken-driving charge from 1994.

State records in Colorado show that Wesley Blake Edwards was supposed to report to court in January 1994. When he didn't, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The newspaper reports that Wesley Blake Edwards, a union electrician who lives in Fuquay-Varina, was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving and operating a vehicle without insurance.

State Division of Motor Vehicle records show that, after misdemeanor drunken-driving convictions in 1985, 1987 and 1990, his driver license was permanently revoked in 1990. Records show he spent a week in jail on one of the convictions.

Wesley Blake Edwards has been cited for driving without a license at least twice since, most recently in Fuquay-Varina in August. He pleaded guilty and paid a $100 fine.

This isn't really news, is it?

It shouldn't be. What a candidates brother does should not matter at all.

I have a black sheep brother so I cannot enter this fray. I'm not responsible for my brother's escapades and neither is Edwards responsible for this.

Unless they produce one of the worst-tasting beers of all time and claim that they are experts because they've drank a lot of beer.

Actually this was reported yesterday, or the day before, in the New York Daily News

I think it's just now being reported in North Carolina media because national coverage forced their hands.

I'm guessing that a certain trial lawyer kept the authorities from contacting Colorado.

So Johnny-boy may be guilty of harboring a felon.

"Fuquay-Varina? Is that in Africa or France?"

Neither! It's the best-named town in North Carolina!

Understood. It was a Southern Californian's poor attempt at humor.

Wasn't John Edwards' son killed by a drunk driver? One would think that the Breck Girl would have kicked his brother's ass by now for placing other people in danger, but I guess that kicking your brother's ass didn't do well with his focus groups (and besides the Breck Girl didn't want people to know about his brother's crimes, lest it keep Kerry from picking him as VP).

The Breck Girl kicking someone's ass?!?!?!? Now that's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time.

But yes, I know Edwards' son was killed, I'm not sure if it was a drunk driver or not. Also, I'm sure that Botox Boy will be pissed that he didn't hear about this from Edwards.

Edwards' son was killed when a gust of wind tipped his Jeep over. A freak accident and very sad when you think about it.

Horribly sad, no doubt about it.

Fuquay Varina is in North Carolina. How he came to be breaking the law in Colorado is unexplained.

IIRC Maryland (for instance) will only extradite if it's a felony charge. No misdemeanors. FWIW

I agree. Unless there is some evidence that Edwards has used his influence to get his brother special favors with the law, I think we should leave this one alone. There are plenty of legitimate reasons why Edwards should not be Vice President, and that's where we should direct our efforts. Slamming him for his brother's behavior may play out in his favor, with Edwards seen as the victim of the "mean, evil Republicans as they pile on and exploit a family tragedy".
