2004 Election Cookie Cook Off FREEP THIS CONTEST
FAMILY CIRCLE ^ | 7/16/04 | f zero

Posted on 07/16/2004 5:27:45 AM PDT by f zero

Each election year, Family Circle magazine holds an Election Cookie Cook-off to find Americans' favorite cookies of the election season. This year, Mrs. Bush shares a recipe for her delicious Oatmeal-Chocolate Chunk cookies. Here's the recipe:

1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups light-brown sugar 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla 3 cups flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons cinnamon 3 cups quick oats (not old-fashioned) 2 cups chopped walnuts 1 1/2 packages (8 ounces each) chocolate chunks (3 cups) 2 cups coarsely chopped dried sour cherries

Heat oven to 350°. With electric mixer, cream butter and both sugars. Beat in eggs one at a time, then beat in vanilla. Add flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and oats; slowly beat until blended. Stir in walnuts, chocolate and cherries. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake at 350° for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden brown. Makes about 8 dozen.

Why can't I picture Tuh-ray-zuh sweating over a hot stove doing the cooking thing?

Any cookie recipe that starts with three whole sticks of butter is ok in my book. Yum!

Ewww! Tay's cookies are the same shade of orange Kerry's face is when he's applied tanning lotion.

Hi, I made both recipes for a party for the President yesterday. Mrs. Bush's won, but Taraza's weren't bad. Hubby liked Taraza's best. I preferred Mrs. Bush's, but, if you tried my personal favorite oatmeal cookie recipe you'd throw both these recipes in the trash.

I had a terrible time finding the dried sour cherries, went to four stores at 10:30 at night before I finally found something that would work (they weren't called "sour" but they didn't have any added sugar). Where did you get your sour cherries?

The cherries were in Walmart in the dried food section, which is in the canned fruit aisle. Either my processor is old and the blade dull (quite possible), or they are amazingly dense. It took maybe 3 minutes to somewhat chop them. They ended up more macerated than chopped, but it worked.

The brand is Mariani. They make dried pineapple and banana chips, too.

I dislike pumpkin and my DH makes a pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, mostly for himself. So, I passed on THK's recipe.

Lack of imagination would be my guess. :)

My picture of her about submitting this recipe, if she did, was her going into the kitchen and asking her chef, Pierre, for a recipe. ; - )

Ah, Walmart, too bad they weren't open that late. My cherries cost $2.50 per bag and it took two bags. At the second to the last store when I was searching for the cherries (the first two stores didn't have any dried cherries), the bags cost $4.99 each!!!!!

Yes, the cherries were VERY hard to chop, I did it with a knife and it wasn't fun. If I had to do it over again, once the cookies were dropped from a teaspoon onto the cookie sheet I'd take a glass, dip the bottom in sugar, and smash them down some before baking. They were just too bulky and thick for me.

Hope your party for the President was fun, mine was!!!

I am pretty sure the Mariani cherries were in that price range and it took 2 bags. They were expensive cookies.

The mashing idea is a good one; they are thick.

Our Walmart is 24/7.

Fun party. One of the couples will host one in September and 2 new volunteers, out of only 10 guests, several of whom are already volunteers. Some ideas for our letter-to-the-editor writers and one guest w/a PhD will try to get some op eds published that relate to his field (Psych...specifically, the hate mentality/how to deal w/brainwashed people and how they got that way)

These next 2 months are the worst for volunteer work and canvassing, but we are starting next week anyway. It should take off in September.

I an WI; what state are you in?

Love you screen name; one of my favorite characters!

I'm in California. Good to hear there will be more of these parties. Ours was fun; however, we didn't do much political talk but hopefully it will help spur us on anyway. The group at our party, none of whom I knew (except for the hostess), were very intelligent and interesting.

But isn't that usually the way when you have a group of conservatives together?
