Terror in the Skies, Again?
Women's Wall Street ^ | Annie Jacobsen

Posted on 07/15/2004 1:12:48 PM PDT by big gray tabby

On June 29, 2004, at 12:28 p.m., I flew on Northwest Airlines flight #327 from Detroit to Los Angeles with my husband and our young son. Also on our flight were 14 Middle Eastern men between the ages of approximately 20 and 50 years old. What I experienced during that flight has caused me to question whether the United States of America can realistically uphold the civil liberties of every individual, even non-citizens, and protect its citizens from terrorist threats.

On that Tuesday, our journey began uneventfully. Starting out that morning in Providence, Rhode Island, we went through security screening, flew to Detroit, and passed the time waiting for our connecting flight to Los Angeles by shopping at the airport stores and eating lunch at an airport diner. With no second security check required in Detroit we headed to our gate and waited for the pre-boarding announcement. Standing near us, also waiting to pre-board, was a group of six Middle Eastern men. They were carrying blue passports with Arabic writing. Two men wore tracksuits with Arabic writing across the back. Two carried musical instrument cases - thin, flat, 18 long. One wore a yellow T-shirt and held a McDonald's bag. And the sixth man had a bad leg -- he wore an orthopedic shoe and limped. When the pre-boarding announcement was made, we handed our tickets to the Northwest Airlines agent, and walked down the jetway with the group of men directly behind us.

So what.

Duplication causes several problems. Just like the old Monty Python skit about spam, if the same thing is posted over and over, it can drown out other valid posts. It needlessly consumes system resources. It fragments discussion.

How dare those nasty middle eastern men use the bathroom?

Either you forgot the sarcasm tag or you did not read the article. This was not just a case of Middle-Eastern men using the bathroom.

I'm well aware of the issue of duplicate threads and when you have five or six of the same thread it is a problem I understand. But often times a thread will get posted and no one sees it so another thread pops up.

It comes down to this - should the rules be strictly followed at the expense of FReepers finding important news such as contained in this thread?

This thread is into three screens with 101 posts. For some reason a lot of people have found this thread, not the other and may never have come across it if it had not been reposted.

Again, I appreciate your concern for the rules and hope I was not rude in my original post to you. Certainly you are correct that we need to watch for this. It just seems at times we burn up more band width with notices something has been posted elsewhere (and the ensuing discussion about it) than if the first thread were just allowed to die its unnoticed death.

I did click on the link you provided. Again, good for all to read. But I call your attention to the last paragraph of at that link.

Finally, I will add that not all duplicates are removed. On the day an article is published, if several hours (four or more) have passed since the article had last been posted, we will tend to leave it up if it is reposted (unless it is still visibile in a sidebar) to make it so that people who don't scroll back several pages will not miss an article of current relevancy. However, this should not be overdone or abused or this may change.

TERROR IN THE SKIES III

By Michelle Malkin · July 16, 2004 03:05 PM
I have been speaking with Brendi Rawlin of Porter Novelli (PR rep for Womens Wall Street). According to Brendi, the Washington Post has been sitting on the true story of Annie Jacobsen's "Terror in the Skies" account since last Friday. Dave Adams, the air marshal's spokesman, not only confirmed the story, but has also apparently supplied witness statements and other corroborations of Jacobsen's account. NBC Nightly News, ABC, and Dateline NBC are now on the story as well.

More to come...

Your bizarre posting style made me wonder the same thing about your own brain cells. Was the second post a "part two" or were you just a bit confused?

I did read the article. But you did not read my earlier posts in which I suggested that it is not obligatory to tell people when you are using sarcasm. If they don't get the joke, that's not my fault.

Update:

http://www.michellemalkin.com

More to come...

3:24pm. Just got off the phone with Annie Jacobsen. She has been writing business reports and articles for WomensWallStreet.com and print magazines for the past two years. Recounting the flight, she told me "My legs were like rubber...It was four and a half hours of terror." She is working on a follow-up story for WomensWallStreet.com on Monday and will appear on NBC Nightly News Monday night. I asked how she felt about suspicions that her story had been a hoax. She hadn't heard of these suspicions and instead has been hearing overwhelming corroboration of her experience in thousands of e-mails, many from pilots and flight attendants reporting similar incidents.

She has been shocked that "for whatever reason, the story didn't develop" in the mainstream media.

I took off my journalist's hat and told her I thought she was a patriot for bringing the story to light.

Now, I want to know why John Mintz and the editors of the Washington Post have deemed Annie Jacobsen's story unfit to print.

And what number was my post in question? For some reason a lot of people have found this thread, not the other

I direct your attention to the other thread, which currently has over 850 posts.

Again, I appreciate your concern for the rules and hope I was not rude in my original post to you. ... It just seems at times we burn up more band width with notices something has been posted elsewhere (and the ensuing discussion about it) than if the first thread were just allowed to die its unnoticed death.

My wee comment in the 2nd post of the thread was a total of 73 characters with spaces. You plainly asked "so what" and I have told you.

As for the article, I think it is very interesting and have enjoyed reading many of the relevant comments on both threads. Thank you for your time. Have a good day. Good bye.

Point blank, assuming that even half of what the woman said in the article is true, a reasonable person would have been highly suspicious.

I am from Seattle where most of our cab drivers wear turbines and I have Arab and Indian friends (I am in software development). I also do a lot of flying and have been at both of these airports on multiple occasions.

There race is only part of the evidence, but it is a big part, and SHOULD be.

We have a phrase up here in Seattle: DWA (Driving While Asian). Race is only part of it, but the stereotype fits far too often. Using race to size up a situation is actually quite prudent.

My mistake. They wear turbans. Their cabs are powered by turbines:

Maybe it seems odd to you to reply to posts as they come instead of reading through the whole thread, but, that's your problem.

Well, to be honest I couldn't find a suitable hotel in South Carolina. How do you know when you're staying in a South Carolina hotel? When you call the front desk and say "I've gotta leak in my sink"... ...and the person at the front desk says "go ahead".

Do you have any original material? As far as finding a suitable hotel in South Carolina, you might try the Francis Marion in Charleston. I'm sure you remember him Mr. Brit...a true American hero.

But you're right. South Carolina is a much simpler place. We know who the enemy is and we have no qualms about what should be done about that enemy. We aren't full of self doubt, self pity, or self imposed guilt. We have a good sense of humor and can laugh at even stupid jokes like yours.

We will help anyone in need, toss political correctness in the garbage whenever we come across it, and understand fully that our Country was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, not on the Koran. So Mr. Brit, now that you know a little bit about South Carolina, y'all come on down for a visit, leave your PC BS behind and learn a lot more.

Thank you for the invite! Of course, I've read about your wonderful home. There was that story about the South Carolina guy who passed away and left a sizeable estate to his beloved widow ... ... However, she can't touch it until she turns fourteen.

Well, at least you've demonstrated the extent of your education, and your reading level. But I guess if your argument falls flat, why not resort to looking up 50 year old jokes to depricate one's home. Typical of DU, if you fail in a reasoned debate, you simply resort to disparagement. In your case though, it's anything but clever, and sheds all too much light on your thought process.
