SHAKING WHOOPI
New York Post ^ | 7/15/04 | DEBORAH ORIN

[snip]

Goldberg began promoting Slim-Fast early this year with the slogan "I'm a Big Loser" — which now has an ironic double meaning.

The statement was issued by Slim-Fast vice president Terry Olson rather than the major Democratic donor who is the company's president, F. Daniel Abraham.

Abraham and his wife — who are big supporters of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) — have given at least $1.2 million to Democratic-leaning groups working to defeat Bush.

Campaign records show no donations by Olson.

Irate Republican activists began burning up the Internet with calls to boycott Slim-Fast and Internet links to send protest emails to the company and its parent, Unilever.

The anti-Slim-Fast activists also traded proposed language for protest letters and phone calls as well as information on which alternate diet shake was the best substitute.

Bush campaign spokesman Steve Schmidt last night declined comment on Slim-Fast's move but reiterated his demand that Kerry release the video of the Bush-bashing "so Americans can see what John Kerry sees as America's heart and soul."

Here's the problem:

This is Unilever, the same company which supports Wesley Cook, the convicted killer of Daniel Faulkner in 1981, in his fight against being executed for the crime.

Mr. Cook is using excuses fabricated from places unknown to push his anti-death penalty crusade, and Unilever has been actively supporting the cause for Mr. Cook and against the widow of the 25-year old police officer.

I got the same auto-reply when I told them that if I saw her face or heard her voice in advertising for their products, their competitors would be the beneficiaries.

I guess the "heart and soul" of America don't agree with Kerry/Edwards and Whoopi. Too bad, so sad.

"Buying their product puts your money into hanoi john's pocket."

Yes, and I've been thinking about this, and I'm not so ready to drop my boycott against this company, nor am I likely to send an email thanking them for doing the right thing and getting rid of Whoopi.

Unilever makes nothing that I can't live without; there are lots of good products out there that are comparable, if not superior (thank God for competition!)

If anything, I'm more likely to send them another email asking them why the president of Slim Fast is silent on this whole affair, and tell them that I'm going to continue the boycott until he makes some public apology to all Unilever customers. As long as the knife is in, why not give it a twist...or is that too mean? *evil grin*

And why stop there? Unilever needs to feel more heat, too. Why not ask them if the corporation shares the political views of one of their company presidents? If so, then they won't be seeing any of my money if I can help it ( if there's an answer from them at all, I really can't imagine getting anything other than a dodge, though).

Now, I know that some will say that what F. Daniel Abraham does with his money is his business, and since money=speech, we shouldn't interfere with someone's right to free speech. That's fine. Mr. Abraham can vote with his pocket book and I'll vote with mine. Words mean things and carry consequences.

"We" are America and "we" have a right to know what is being represented in our behalf. Why can't a lawsuit be filed demanding that this video be disclosed so that we can decide if these comments represent our hear and soul?

The Kerry campaign has declined to release the video, countering by demanding the release of documents it believes would embarrass Bush.

My favorite line in the article. They admit the campaign is emarrassed, and demand that the Bush campaign do something embarrassing to make things even.

I think it is wrong to not buy anything from Slimfast or Unilever now. I think it is great we got whopeeeee ousted.
Slimfast needs to be rewarded for their move, not punished.
If Slimfast is still punished other companies in the future will not get rid ofeir spokespeople if they are going to loose the business anyway. I'm just thrilled to death Whoopie got ousted. Every time I watched her show my BP went up 30 points (it was the only channel I get in the garage when working on my Rustang)

Besides most of these large companies donate to Republicans as well as DemocRats so as not to offend whoever is in office.

"I think it is wrong to not buy anything from Slimfast or Unilever now."

That's your opinion, and I respect that, but let me put the way I feel another way with an analogy:

We're in a war. Mr. Abraham has just supplied my enemies with way over 1,000,000 rounds of ammo. I don't have anywhere near that amount of ammo and now you're asking me to give Mr. Abraham some of mine so the enemy can use those against me, too? I don't think so, No Sir!!!

Shame Abraham can't be fired, too.

Actually, I suspect the libs will complain about a lack of free speech .. their standard complaint.

Yes, well, they've really boxed themselves in on that account. By all means, let's see the tape - free speech indeed.

As pointed out on another thread, the SlimFast endorsement was not the biggest issue.

The fact she hosts a children's show on Nick Jr, which targets children five and under, is the true outrage.

What about making a smoothie, low fat yogurt, or milk, and fruit, don't add any sugar or sweetner (sweetner is bad for you). If you need it for lunch at work put it in one of those water bottle things, or an empty water bottle after you guzzled the water out of it. You get the benefit of fresh fruit and low fat dairy. slim fast is not all that good for you just convient.

Carnation I think makes a powered breakfast drink...look in the cereal isle where the oat meal is...there are also cereal bars to look at.

Unilever is the same company that owns Lipton Tea which continued to sponsor the Dixie Chicks after Natalie Maines' nonsense in England last year. Look at where Unilever advertises: On Viacom channels. They are one HUGE RATpack.
