NEWS FLASH: Ditka storms out of meeting
Wednesday, July 14, 2004
By The Leader-Chicago Bureau CHICAGO -- This morning in downtown Chicago, Mike Ditka left a secret meeting with IL GOP decision makers, angered about the media being tipped off.
Ditka was to meet with members of the IL GOP State Central Committee and to speak via conference call with national level Republicans.
As word of the meeting leaked out to the press, Ditka reportedly was angered when met by reporters, exited the meeting promptly and hopped into his black Escalade, and left, obviously upset.
Matt Drudge reported this morning that an announcement would be made at 9:30 am.
No word as to the ensuing discussion among state central committee members left at the meeting, which is still going on.
Ditka's willingness to take on the candidacy may be in doubt now.
Developing story . . .

Thanks - that's pretty funny. I can hear the voices....
I've got nothing against Ditka (though it sounds like he may lack self-control). I just get tired of the cheerleading for anybody who'll run as a Republican, even before we know what their policies are.
Ditka will kick butt and take names, like Arnold in California. IL Gov. Blago better hope Ditka wins the Senate race cause he could do much better at running Illinois than the present cast of democrat characters.
Hmmm. Okay, so you're confused then. Let me help you out. In my post at re:#126 I said the following.
"Ditka is well known for his outbursts, except this isn't football. Politics takes a certain demeanor. Bad behavior won't work. Ditka is a larger then life force and a Republican. I don't know how conservative he is. But making a stink about a report by Matt Drudge, shouldn't get you upset."
I said Ditka was well known for his outbursts. I don't think anyone denies that. I said politics takes a certain demeanor. On that you agreed with me. You even repeated the phrase I used. I said, just becasue Ditka is a larger then life force doesn't mean he's suited for the political arena. I suppose he's a Republican, but don't know if he is a conservative. Anyone who wants to be a public servant, needs to show disipline and not allow media types like Drudge to upset them.
I hope that clarifies things for ya.
As for Ditka running. That's his choice. So far, I see no reason to support him, but that could change. I don't mind feisty candidates who speak their mind. I don't like candidates who can't control their emotions. Whether Ditka is a feisty candidate or an angry candidate is totally up to him.
I also was trying to say that the press likes to interpret things their own way (Ditka isn't tempermentally suited for the Senate...as is headlined in a Chicago Tribune sports column today).
If Ditka is unable to control his temper for most of the time, of course he shouldn't run. However, I think the story is an exagerration, and he will be quite able to do so, especially if he sees it as a strategy to winning the game.
By the way, in case you didn't see it, he will be appearing at the Navy Pier tonight with Denny Hastert. I think he would not do so if he were not going to run.
The irony is that Iron Mike might end up showing that Barak Obama is simply not a serious candidate in a post-9/11 world.
Cheney could continue to do all of the things you mention from some other other position in the administration - Sec. of State? Chief of Staff?
Under the Constitution, the VP is empowered to do only one thing: break ties. All of the power Cheney wields is given to him unofficially. He could continue to have this influence from any other position in the administration.
Maybe.
I was simply answering your question.
[I have no idea what you are talking about. Are you referring to me being upset (I am not) or Ditka (we don't know for sure about that)?]
Whether Ditka can control his famous temper and not flair up on the campaign trail, is an important issue and his hot temper isn't an exaggeration. Its a well known fact. Its newsworthy that Ditka will attend Speaker Hastert's GOP event tonight, but that doesn't mean he's the best candidate or even a good candidate.
Exactly.
A) Ditka can win.
B) Ditka, at least at this point, looks far more conservative than most current Pubbie senators.
C) Go ahead and run all the ads you want with Ditka blowing his stack and swearing. Every ad will get him MORE, not less, votes. We're talking about Chicago, and Ditka is immortal there. Those SNL bits with "da bears" fans are funny because they're true.
D) Ditka, even if he's not a pure conservative, is at least more conservative than his opponent; and that's the only standard that's relevant at this point.
E) See (A)
F) See (A)
1- "And conservatives love Cheney."
2- "...Cheney is the first official co-POTUS."
3- "Dropping Cheney would infuriate Bush`s conservative base."
Bush understands and respects loyality. He knows Cheney is the best man for the job. He will keep the ticket intact, as it should be. Cheney is going nowhere.
No, Shillery was the first Co-President.
Bush doesn't need to be disloyal and "dump" Cheney. Cheney can instead be loyal to Bush, fake a heart attack, and step aside for "health reasons". His health can then have a dramatic recovery after the election, at which time he'll rejoin the administration, preferably as Sec of State. Wouldn't you like to see him go to the UN and tell Kofi to go @*$($ himself?
Oops. My bad. LOL
>>>Cheney can instead be loyal to Bush, fake a heart attack, and step aside for "health reasons".
That's a great script idea for a Hollywood movie. Send it care of, Lawrence O'Donnell, westwing,nbc/msnbc/pbs fame.
Bush-Cheney, one more time.
Thanks Dave ... you made my day shine.
Come on Ditka, what's the big secret?
If the Dems used those clips, Ditka would win in a landslide!!!
LOL
I am so ANGRY!!!! When will these insiders who are dying to be the person of attention learn???!!! SOMTIMES the ONLY thing to do is keep your big trap shut, and mind your OWN business!!!!
Of course just color me an old style Constitutionalist. I don't think candidates from any state should receive monies or funds from outside of the state. And I don't think national organizations or establishments should be able to play musical chairs with Senatorial or House representation as they are wont to do and gleefully cheered on by 'conservatives'
Its all Drudge's fault??
