NEWS FLASH: Ditka storms out of meeting

By The Leader-Chicago Bureau CHICAGO -- This morning in downtown Chicago, Mike Ditka left a secret meeting with IL GOP decision makers, angered about the media being tipped off.
Ditka was to meet with members of the IL GOP State Central Committee and to speak via conference call with national level Republicans.
As word of the meeting leaked out to the press, Ditka reportedly was angered when met by reporters, exited the meeting promptly and hopped into his black Escalade, and left, obviously upset.
Matt Drudge reported this morning that an announcement would be made at 9:30 am.
No word as to the ensuing discussion among state central committee members left at the meeting, which is still going on.
Ditka's willingness to take on the candidacy may be in doubt now.

I agree with both of you. "Dumping" Cheney would be seen (rightly so) as an act of political desperation and weakness on Dubya's part.
Why would Bush want to go soft at the precise moment the party, the political base, the world, and especially the murderous Islamofascists NEED to see him stay tough?
It hasn't harmed Daschle. How long has he been in Washington? There are plenty of histrionic-prone politicians. Besides, the news has NOT yet reported the FULL story.
If he can't take a small leak like this, then maybe he should consider another career.
Politics requires a certain demeanor usually. Some people can get away without having that demeanor. Hillary is one...no matter how much she sounds like a fishwife, the media only covers her calm statements.
In the case of Ditka, he will be one who can rant at the press without paying the price. Everyone already knows he has a temper and doesn't like the press, and they still are supportive of him running. It's that "regular guy" thing, which certain politicians can use to their advantage. Jess Ventura used it to get elected. He was a poor governor, but he was great at getting elected.
In the case of Ditka, I imagine he would be a great campaigner, but would probably get fed up pretty quickly having to deal with the likes of Carl Levin and Joe Biden. He probably would only last one term, but that is ok with me. He would hold the seat in the Republican column and make the democrats spend a lot of money in Illinois, even if he loses.
So Ditka got mad at the politicos, I would think he would often be mad at the way things 'work' in Washington. We need 100 Ditka's in the Senate.
The VP slot isnt a personality contest. While it may appear to be so by the media, who want to count votes according to some lightweight personality contest, I'm voting for men and women who speak to the values of America. Like Bush and Cheney, for example.
The press is going to despise him no matter what he does or says. That is a fact. Do you really think Cheney would gain more public/media/liberal acceptance if he suddenly started wearing cardigans and Mr. Rogers loafers, flashed a John Edwards smile at everyone, and publicly hugged Patrick Leahy?
They still have to be competent politicians. Cheney is a horrible politician and it is a part of the job description. He apparently wanted all the power and none of the hard interpersonal relations stuff.
He's apparently not as despised as Bush is. He's not as despised as Reagan was or Bush 41 (as both VP and top dog) or else the media isn't as powerful as you think, and, in fact, politicians can create their own approval ratings through skill. Cheney is a poor politician and a VP has to be a politician, too. I get the sense that he hates doing anything political in nature. He just likes the power of being a politician.
I hope he goes for it.
One more NON-LAWYER representative is one more good man for the country.

But it doesn't change what I said - I don't think he can keep his anger in check. In the heat of the moment, I don't think he'll act in a responsible fashion, but many people here seem to want him to punch somebody, so what do I know?
