DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years: Bill Gates

FRANKFURT (AFP) - DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years at
the latest, Microsoft boss and founder Bill Gates
(news - web sites) predicted.

Stuck on Tape?
The ultimate guide to digital camcorders, HDTV cameras,
and super-portable video cell phones.

Asked what home entertainment would like in the future,
Gates said that DVD technology would be "obsolete in
10 years at the latest. If you consider that
nowadays we have to carry around film and music on
little silver discs and stick them in the computer,
it's ridiculous," Gates said in comments reproduced
in German in the mass-circulation daily Bild.

"These things can scratch or simply get lost."

Gates' vision of television of the future was: "TV that
will simply show what we want to see, when we want
to see it. When we get home, the home computer will
know who we are from our voice or our face. It will
know what we want to watch, our favourite
programmes, or what the kids shouldn't be allowed to
see."

I think it's part of "Beyond". You never really know what you'll find at BB&B, but often it's cool stuff. I found a handheld Intellivision (you know the antique game system that George Plimton used to be spokesman for) there once. Be warned about the kitchen gadgets though, in a year you'll find the same thing at Target for about half the price.

...it will mean being able to access any recorded television -- movies, TV, sporting events, etc -- ever made.

At which point I will be paralyzed by too many choices, and will be unable to decide on anything.

How is it going to know what I want to watch when even I don't know?

That's the magic of it.

media companies would dearly like to convert all media to a pay-per-view model

Just remember DIVX that we all fought to defeat and won a rare victory!

The guy that thought 640K would be plenty

That was IBM, not BG.

I could see people having there own personal central media content storage server that would stream to a personal player via the web both over wire and wireless links

This assumes a seamless wireless web coverage akin to coverage we now have with cell phones along with some high capacity storage on the local device/player for when you’re out of a coverage area

Whats the big deal. I have a fob on a keychain that carries 256mb. They already have memory sticks the size of stamps with 1gb capacity. Is it that difficult to imagine we'll stop using optical and go to highspeed storage devices?

And I have 128MB on my keychain. I have no problem with the storage devices whether they be magnetic, optical, nuclear, etc. What I have a problem with is if it has the technology to pick programs for you it also has the capability to market directly to you but more importantly has the ability to see you and watch you over fiber optic lines. Nah thanks.. I'll pass.

When I had cable they already had movies on demand. The issue was the limited selection, and they didn't seem to do much to build the library.

Remember that to tell your grandkids.

You got the earliest version of how we'll all be watching TV some day.

And the main thing is: you'll never again have a chance to hold an object in your hands that has the show on it...so they can make you pay, and pay, and pay... every single time you watch.

This is right about the same time that I will be able to teleport myself to and from work, my hover-craft will fold up into a brief case and all my food will be in the form of a capsule.

Ruh roh.

Wanta go for ten days, Bill? Get your boys to integrate DVDs as a critical part of XP SP2 and my guess is they'll fall apart before our very eyes ...

Hey Bill, what about Bob?

Ouch, that's harsh. Bob is to Bill as Kryptonite was to Superman.

He actually bought the digital rights back in the 90s (if memory serves me a little) to just about every piece of artwork out there. Yes, he pays royalties...to himself.

Someone please correct me if I missed it...

I'm kind of worried about this, because if my tv reacts to what I like and don't like, the next time Hillary Clinton appears on screen, my tv might explode.
