  ~ MILITARY REQUESTS ~

Helping our military!!

If you are interested in helping our military, please FReepmail MoJo2001, Brad's Gramma, or Kathy In Alaska for more information. Below is a brief overview of the help that is needed. Thank you!

Operation Semper Fi - Field Hospital in Iraq needs basic necessities and anything else you can think of.

Operation Iraqi Children - An Active Duty FReeper, smaagee, has requested help for children ages 3-11 in Mosul. If you are interested in helping, please contact us. Make sure to put "Operation Iraqi Children" in the subject line.

Operation Military Families - Many military family members have been affected by the deployments. As with many places in the United States, it has taken quite a toll on the population in general. In Indiana, "close" to 100,000 Active Duty and Reservists have left the State. Many of those family members left behind are having a hard time, if you are interested in helping then contact us.

Donations For Our Troops - If you'd like to help send care packages without having to shop, we've found a reliable FRiend to help you. Please contact patriciaruth in FReepmail. She has been doing this for a long time and would be happy to have the help.

Operation Convoys - Our military folks that are members of those Transportation companies need help with the basic necessities and items to hold them over until they return back to base. We've all heard about roadside bombings. Please help make their life a little easier.

Operation Emails, FReepmail, and SNAIL MAIL - So? You don't have the time or money to send anything, how about an email or snail mail? You can even send a FReepmail. We would be happy to send it forward.

WALTER REED & BETHESDA HOSPITALS - FReeper TruthNtegrity visits our Troops in the hospital as often as possible. She needs some help getting them pre-paid phone cards and something to pass the time by. (Such as games, magazines, etc..). If you are interested in helping, please FReepmail her. Thank you!

Operation Care Packages - If you'd like to bring a smile to any of our brave heroes, send them a little something from home. It will go a long way to lifting their morale. It's a long road to killing all the terrorists. Don't let our brave heroes forget that we care about them. FReepmail us if you'd like to help.

Are you not sure what to send or do?

Thank you!

Swift is a wave-piercing aluminum-hulled catamaran that can move at speeds greater than 45 knots. With a draft allowing it to navigate in only 12 feet of water it can easily maneuver in and out of littoral environments. RIMPAC is the largest international maritime exercise in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. This year’s exercise includes seven participating nations; Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom and United States. CONGRATULATIONS!

THE WINNER TO MONDAY MAYHEM IS.....

HIJINX!

He correctly answered all the questions!

A few things:

Thank you to everyone that played!
Um, tomkow and Bethy are just Canteen relatives. Not real relatives.

StarCMC and kjfine are actually brother and sister. (I'll have to call their Ma to make sure. LOL)

Queenie and bentfeather are the same person. (Don't ask tomkow about that. He'll tell you a "story" that just won't be true. Hehe!) And for the smarty pants that wanted to know what country she's Queen of. Well, wouldn't you like to know? WE AREN'T SHARING! Hehe!

Auntie Fawnn actually created the opening graphic. Not MoJo's driving instructor. (MoJo doesn't need one of those lame things anyways. Hehe!)

HiJinx is Piper's Poppa...not tomkow's. (This one had me rolling for awhile.)

Glock Rocks created the GROCKS system. Avenger System by NormsRevenge isn't truly a system. Unless Mojo missed it somewhere. Just made up to help you find the answer quickly.

The Canteener that has 2 grandchildren with one named Jacob is beachn4fun. Auntie Fawnn has a million (well 3 for now! Hehe!), but none are currently named Jacob.

VALIN is the Canteen History Dude. (Well, he has a more proper name, but MoJo is writing this. What do you expect?)

Also, MoJo would like to thank everyone that wished her Dad a Happy Birthday. (This is totally not meant to be here, but she's too lazy to formally do it. Sheesh!)

So? Watch out for another Monday Mayhem near you!

Ya never know when we come up with something stranger than usual!

Congratulations HiJinx!
MoJo has your address already. So? No need to write it to her. Hehe!

Greetings, Canteeners, Troops,
and All the Ships at Sea!

Well, Demon Cat has joined Sarge in ushering in Hell Week at Fort McCoy - the final phase of the training that Sarge has been on since May. And what a deal! Twenty-four hour operations, constant computer work, briefings in front of VIP's - all designed to see how much ankle-biting pressure you can handle.

And insult to injury, Internet access is now down to almost nothing - which is why Sarge is making a late-night, drive-by post to the Canteen this early Tuesday. But hey, the gang over in the Sandbox has it far worse than Sarge, so just suck it up, right?

So, on to a few Personals before sign-off:

TONKIN/DIVALOCA: Just yet another fantastic thread for all of us to see and share! The lights are on for another day...

MOJO/HIJINX: Monday Mayhem sees the first prize go out to Jinx this time. We'll see what happens NEXT week...

BEACH/BETSY/RADU: I don't see you ladies except in passing, so I wanted to include you in at least one day, when I say HI!! to just y'all...

STAR/BETSY/KATHY/SPOTSY/MS. B./AND THE REST OF THE GALZ: Sorry that dancing is pretty much out for a few nights, but as we all see now, there's a few more eligible fellas to pick up the tune, so CARRY ON!

BENTFEATHER: Speaking of dancing, the Poets' Dance was WONDERFUL Sunday night. I always look forward to the time when we shall spin once more, so let's make it soon!

Sarge will be back tomorrow, so in the meantime, Y'all Have Fun!

Today's FEEBLE

YOKE :

A new, young MD doing his residency in OB was quite embarrassed performing female pelvic exams. To cover his
embarrassment he had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly as he went about doing the examinations.

One morning, the young lady upon whom he was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing and further embarrassed him.

He looked up from his work and sheepishly said, "I'm sorry. Was I tickling you?"

She replied, "No Doc, but the song you were whistling was, 'I wish I were an Oscar Meyer Weiner'."

Photograph, Medal of Honor and Flags

GARY, DONALD ARTHUR

Rank and organization: Lieutenant, Junior Grade, U.S. Navy, U.S.S. Franklin.

Place and date: Japanese Home Islands near Kobe, Japan, 19 March 1945.

Entered service at: Ohio.

Born: 23 July 1903, Findlay, Ohio.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as an engineering officer attached to the U.S.S. Franklin when that vessel was fiercely attacked by enemy aircraft during the operations against the Japanese Home Islands near Kobe, Japan, 19 March 1945.

Stationed on the third deck when the ship was rocked by a series of violent explosions set off in her own ready bombs, rockets, and ammunition by the hostile attack, Lt. (j.g.) Gary unhesitatingly risked his life to assist several hundred men trapped in a messing compartment filled with smoke, and with no apparent egress. As the imperiled men below decks became increasingly panic stricken under the raging fury of incessant explosions, he confidently assured them he would find a means of effecting their release and, groping through the dark, debris-filled corridors, ultimately discovered an escapeway. Stanchly determined, he struggled back to the messing compartment 3 times despite menacing flames, flooding water, and the ominous threat of sudden additional explosions, on each occasion calmly leading his men through the blanketing pall of smoke until the last one had been saved. Selfless in his concern for his ship and his fellows, he constantly rallied others about him, repeatedly organized and led fire-fighting parties into the blazing inferno on the flight deck and, when firerooms 1 and 2 were found to be inoperable, entered the No. 3 fireroom and directed the raising of steam in 1 boiler in the face of extreme difficulty and hazard. An inspiring and courageous leader, Lt. (j.g.) Gary rendered self-sacrificing service under the most perilous conditions and, by his heroic initiative, fortitude, and valor, was responsible for the saving of several hundred lives. His conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon himself and upon the U.S. Naval Service.

GERSTUNG, ROBERT E.

Rank and organization: Technical Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company H, 313th Infantry, 79th Infantry Division.

Place and date: Siegfried Line near Berg, Germany, 19 December 1944.

Entered service at: Chicago, Ill.

Born: 6 August 1915, Chicago, Ill.

G.O. No.: 75, 5 September 1945.

Citation: On 19 December 1944 he was ordered with his heavy machinegun squad to the support of an infantry company attacking the outer defense of the Siegfried Line near Berg, Germany.

For 8 hours he maintained a position made almost untenable by the density of artillery and mortar fire concentrated upon it and the proximity of enemy troops who threw hand grenades into the emplacement. While all other members of his squad became casualties, he remained at his gun. When he ran out of ammunition, he fearlessly dashed across bullet-swept, open terrain to secure a new supply from a disabled friendly tank. A fierce barrage pierced the water jacket of his gun, but he continued to fire until the weapon overheated and jammed. Instead of withdrawing, he crawled 50 yards across coverless ground to another of his company's machineguns which had been silenced when its entire crew was killed. He continued to man this gun, giving support vitally needed by the infantry. At one time he came under direct fire from a hostile tank, which shot the glove from his hand with an armor-piercing shell but could not drive him from his position or stop his shooting. W hen the American forces were ordered to retire to their original positions, he remained at his gun, giving the only covering fire. Finally withdrawing, he cradled the heavy weapon in his left arm, slung a belt of ammunition over his shoulder, and walked to the rear, loosing small bursts at the enemy as he went. One hundred yards from safety, he was struck in the leg by a mortar shell; but, with a supreme effort, he crawled the remaining distance, dragging along the gun which had served him and his comrades so well. By his remarkable perseverance, indomitable courage, and heroic devotion to his task in the face of devastating fire, T/Sgt. Gerstung gave his fellow soldiers powerful support in their encounter with formidable enemy forces.

"If there be any glory in war, let it rest on the shoulders of men like these."   -- Audie Murphy

Thank you to every soldier, sailor, airman, marine and coast guardsman who has ensured that I have the freedoms I have today.  You are my heroes.

You will not be forgotten.

Good Morning troops!! Good Morning everyone! Here is today's humor attempt!

"Do you believe in life after death?" the boss asked one of his employees.

"Yes, Sir." the new recruit replied.

"Well, then, that makes everything just fine," the boss went on. "After you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother's funeral, she stopped in to see you."
