RNC MASS DEFENSE IN NEW YORK... (NLG to defend anarchists at Republican Convention in NYC
National Lawyer's Guild - NYC Chapter ^ | unknown

Posted on 07/12/2004 6:33:46 PM PDT by sc2_ct

The National Lawyers Guild, founded in 1937, is an association of lawyers, law students, legal workers and jailhouse lawyers dedicated to the proposition that human rights are more important than property rights.

The Mass Defense Committee of the NLG-NYC Chapter, which has been providing legal observers and lawyers for activists since 1968, is proud to offer its depth of experience and knowledge to activists organizing events surrounding the Republican National Convention this summer in New York City. We can be contacted at:

Mass Defense Committee
National Lawyers Guild, New York City Chapter
143 Madison Avenue, 4th Floor
New York, NY 10016
(212) 679-6018
(212)679-6178 (fax)
nycmassdefense@riseup.net

The Committee is coordinating its efforts to provide RNC Mass Defense legal support with the People’s Law Collective, the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and the New York Civil Liberties Union.

ATTORNEYS
We are actively recruiting lawyers to provide pro-bono (free) legal representation. Ideally, we will find enough pro-bono lawyers to represent everyone who may be arrested at protests during the Convention. However, given the possibility of unprecedented numbers of arrests, we cannot guarantee we will be able to recruit enough lawyers to volunteer. That is why the Guild is also recruiting lawyers who would be willing to provide legal representation at “low bono” (substantially reduced) rates. In light of this, activists may want to make some contingency legal defense fundraising plans.

If you are a lawyer interested in helping out, please download our Attorney Questionnaire (PDF format), and mail or fax it to:

RNC Mass Defense
National Lawyers Guild, New York City Chapter
143 Madison Avenue, 4th Floor
New York, NY 10016
Fax: (212) 679-6178

If you are a lawyer and are interested in helping, but you do not have criminal defense experience, we will be offering CLE trainings this summer. Fill out and send us the our Attorney Questionnaire (PDF format) and watch our Calendar for upcoming trainings.

Got more on that coming. . .here's a preview of the part dealing with Drinan:

---

Kerry’s relationship with the VVAW developed out of his relationship with Robert Drinan, an antiwar priest. Drinan has been an advisor to Kerry’s 2004 campaign.

In 1968 Drinan was the national vice president of the National Lawyers Guild, identified in a 1950 Congressional investigation as a Communist front group. In 1969 Drinan traveled to Vietnam on behalf of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, another Communist front group chaired by Daniel Berrigan, another antiwar priest. Drinan spoke at a New Mobe event in March 1970 while he was running for Congress and John Kerry was working for his campaign.

---

More to follow.

There's a preview of the part on Drinan in #181.

Hmm... I wasn't aware that Drinan put Kerry in touch with the VVAW. I'll look forward to your article.

"Hmm... I wasn't aware that Drinan put Kerry in touch with the VVAW. I'll look forward to your article."

Hmmm, maybe I need to reword that. I didn't mean to imply that Drinan personally put Kerry in touch with the VVAW, though that may be the case. What I meant more precisely was that it was Kerry's work for Drinan and the Vietnam Moratorium Committee (which Drinan was also supporting at that time) that brought him into contact with the VVAW. Here is perhaps a more precise description from a different part of the article:

"On January 3, 1970, Kerry requested an early discharge to run for Congress on an antiwar platform. His Congressional campaign’s prospects looked bleak against rival antiwar candidate Father Robert Drinan, and in February 1970 he quit his own campaign to instead join Drinan’s and become its chairman. While working for Drinan’s staff he did work for the Moratorium Committee and met leaders of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW)."

BTW in context this is accompanied by some stuff on the Moratorium Committee and its relation to the VVAW, Adam Walinsky, and Peggy Kerry which puts the above in perspective. If you think there's a better way I should word that let me know, either here or privately--like I say this is a preview, not a final draft.

That seems quite clear the way you have it... thanks for the explanation.

There are a lot of regionalist and provincial people on FR,who hate N.Y.C.,see this nation as a "police state",and tinfoil is their usual day and night wear.So that anecdotal story doesn't hep your argument at all.

The media were overtly sympathetic to the cretinous protesters in '68.They always shall be on the wrong side. But the question here is,will the American populace, see the lunatic protesters for what they are,or see them as sane and correct about getting rid of President Bush. This isn't 1968;this isn't even the same world as September 10,2001!

Perhaps you think that I'm giving the American populace too much credit in the intellect department, but in this case,I do think I'm correct.Seeing the wannabe hippies, isn't going to make them vote for Kerry.

AGREE... if anyone asks, tell them you are filming for submission to Michael Moore. Tell them to be as outrageous as possible. Tell them you're positive that their faces will be blocked out in the editing process.

If Moore lies about this stuff, why can't we?

I might just accidently trip a few and let their anarchist buddies trample them in the madness.

I have no sympathy for someone that will deliberately do something to endanger the lives of others. He/she will get whatever is coming to them, after they are filmed committing whatever heinous act it is they are planning.

The convention is just the warm-up act, I'm afraid.

After Bush is re-elected, the left is going to engage in insurrection.

Recommended course of action for all who love this country:

1. BLOAT

2. Be prepared to invoke Rule 7.62 on insurrectionists, seditionists, traitors, and their sputniki.

3. Aim small, miss small. (+)

Dem activists advocating rubbing themselves down with gun powder

I advocate they do so at a candlelight vigil.

On Brit Hume's Special Report tonight, there was a brief segment on Dem activists advocating rubbing themselves down with gun powder and situating themselves in the subway and places near Madison Square Garden, so they would throw off bomb sniffing dogs and create havoc and possibly disrupt the convention. Nothing on it on the FOX website.

If crazy Dem protestors start fouling up NYC by tampering with security issues, they'll look like abosulte FREAKOS and will convince the middle of America that Dems are NOT the ones to be fighting terrorism.
