An Australian mongrel fed on kangaroo and emu could be the oldest dog in the world. A vet in the outback town of Wilcannia has established that Jerry, a red heeler-bull terrier cross, will make it to 189 dog years when he hits 27 in August. Dogs rarely live past their 15th birthday, but Jerry shows little sign of fragility beyond some arthritis and worn teeth. "He is a remarkably solid dog for his age and has not got that wasted look that animals and old people get," the town's RSPCA vet, Honey Nelson, told the Melbourne Herald Sun.
"I think it's partly genetic, but also because he's a fit, roo-hunting dog who used to catch a lot of emu and roo. He could push on to 28."
The oldest dog on record was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who died in 1939 at the age of 29.
Jerry's owners, Aboriginal leader Waddie Smith and his wife Aileen, said he was a gentle creature who had never fathered pups.
"Everyone in Wilcannia knows him because he's never hurt anyone, although he does not like cats in the yard - they're his one enemy," said Mr Smith.
"He means a lot to me. He still comes for a bush walk with me. I take him nearly every night and he jumps up and wants to grab me on the arm like when he was younger."
I stopped giving them peanut butter after one of the girls nearly gagged to death because she got some stuck in the roof of her mouth.
She was fine after she managed to dislodge it but it scared the bejeebers outta me in the meantime.
They didn't seem to have a problem with peanut butter when it was in the form of "Peanut Butter Ritz Bits".
Maybe the crackers somehow kept the peanut butter from "sticking".
Another funny thing was the tiny "dog bones" from Kibbles & Bits type dog food.
They looked hilarious clutching those tiny little bones....sorta like little ratty cavemen....:)
I loved to watch them eat sweet peas.
They'd bite a hole in the pea, eat all the innards and then throw the "husk" away.....:))
They fed him burgers from McDonalds? And he lived that long???

I understand why kangaroo meat isn't kosher (no cloven hooves), but why isn't ostrich? It's a herbivor bird. Shouldn't it be in the same class as turkey or chicken?

Around here, we call that "bait!" Sushi is what you use to catch fish that you cook!

Well, there isn't always a "why" for these things. But bat haya'ana in Leviticus 11:16 is typically translated as "ostrich":
The following you shall abominate among the birds--they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, the vulture, and the black vulture; the kite, falcons of every variety; all varieties of raven; the ostrich, the night-hawk, the sea gull; hawks of every variety (Leviticus 11:13-16, New JPS translation)
WHAT! You don't have a dog? Life is not worth living without a dog. Get out there & get one! ;9)

Coco wants to know if it tastes like chicken?
Jack says YUMMY!!
Thanks - very interesting. I'm guessing, then, that "ostrich" is an interpretation rather than a literal translation. If so, do you know what the literal translation is?
A literal translation would be "daughter of the owl". But this expression may be simply a name, and not intended to be translated literally (examples in English would include things like "catfish").
Life is a great deal emptier, it's true- but no more for me.
I was blessed in finding three souls who loved me and gave me joy for years. The first was the Pom mix who was my heart for 19 years. Then I had the love and devotion of two magnificent Shelties for almost 14 years. Sometimes I miss them so badly it hurts to breathe.
But I can't do it again. I can't dig any more graves in my yard to put my heart into. I've been far luckier than most to have known that kind of love. How I miss it; but I don't have it in me to lose any more.
Funny how, no matter how long you live, most of your time will be spent dead.
Ah! I see what you did wrong. You only had one dog at a time. You need to get a new puppy at least every 5 years. That way you don't lose them all at one time. Right now I have 4 Jack Russel Terriers. A 14 year old, an 8 yr old & 2 young ones. The young ones are 9 & 7 months. When the 14 year old & the 8 year old are gone I'll get another dog, maybe another Rodesian Ridgeback. We have had 7 JRT's in the last 15 years. I had to put down 2 last summer. Yes its hard to lose one but I had other dogs at home waiting to console me. Then when I found the right puppies I couldn't pick between them, so took both. Life is too sad without canine friends to love. Best of luck in your search for a new one. ;9)
Yep, that's happening to my 15.5 yr old.
As an aside, in the event that it's not the same "Ostrich", you still can't eat it as the shochet can't determine where to cut the neck , like giraffes. I've also heard there are issue with eating rocks and pebbles, aka dirt.
Well - you never know what swimming at Summer Camp can do...
You know how to click to to profiles (learn something missy) though it's Illinois and Wisconsin. We have native critters here, and venison probably beats kangaroo (haven't tried it), same with wild turkey over emu.
We don't have crocs, but lots of fish.
Exactly!
I did look at the profile but I did not see where the flag was from....I just knew you were not from California...)
Did you hear the sissy cops shot and killed Bobo today! while he was sleeping!!
No I didn't, you can post the link if you like. Some leos have a thing about dogs, but it's really about shooting something.
