An Australian mongrel fed on kangaroo and emu could be the oldest dog in the world. A vet in the outback town of Wilcannia has established that Jerry, a red heeler-bull terrier cross, will make it to 189 dog years when he hits 27 in August. Dogs rarely live past their 15th birthday, but Jerry shows little sign of fragility beyond some arthritis and worn teeth. "He is a remarkably solid dog for his age and has not got that wasted look that animals and old people get," the town's RSPCA vet, Honey Nelson, told the Melbourne Herald Sun.
"I think it's partly genetic, but also because he's a fit, roo-hunting dog who used to catch a lot of emu and roo. He could push on to 28."
The oldest dog on record was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who died in 1939 at the age of 29.
Jerry's owners, Aboriginal leader Waddie Smith and his wife Aileen, said he was a gentle creature who had never fathered pups.
"Everyone in Wilcannia knows him because he's never hurt anyone, although he does not like cats in the yard - they're his one enemy," said Mr Smith.
"He means a lot to me. He still comes for a bush walk with me. I take him nearly every night and he jumps up and wants to grab me on the arm like when he was younger."
I know what you mean.
I gave up on the "by the book" art of rat care after that.
The last two I had got the remains of whatever we had for breakfast/lunch/dinner plus some dry dog food every day.
They did pretty well on that "diet"....:))
I used to give them that weird breakfast cereal that was *supposed* to look/taste like french toast simply because it cracked me up to watch them munching their tiny "sandwiches"....LOL!
True. That's why I mentioned substitutions, deer (farm raised and properly slaughtered, of course) and chicken.
"onions or grapes"
I always heard chocolate would kill a dog. I left a huge bowl of Halloween chocolate and my 2 Rodesian Ridgebacks got them. They ate them wrappers & all & never had a sick moment. My brother is a vet I'll ask him about the onions & grapes.
Your right it is not Kosher to eat Kangaroos Ostrich and Emu's..no one should eat them....
Okay so now you cannot eat roo roos and emus :0)
Interesting story!
Well I did have Gator tail and it was pretty tasty, but I would not eat Zoo animals....Anyways men don't need to eat bunches of meat because it is not good for there hearts as they age...
Dark semi-sweet chocolate is very dangerous. Almost killed my Sheltie when he got into my grocery bags.
On the other hand, I had a little 12 lb Chihauhaua Pomeranian mix who was a freak for M&M's. He died a few days short of his 19th birthday of old age.
Aww- this thread makes me miss my boys...
Same critter, farm raised, which you likely ate, zoo or wild.
Well I liked it before I knew it was a gator because it tasted like Calamari. But I believe the gator came from a farm, he was not from the wild...
I can eat some sushi if it is not slimy looking...
We have a very old dog who has never eaten onions, grapes nor olives. If given any of the aforementioned, he will lie down on his back and roll on them.
If if doesn't squeal, it's not a meal...
I use to eat sushi at a great place in Carlsbad called Belle Fluer Singi ran the sushi bar and I liked most everything he prepared, but then he just walked off the job and took the sushi bar with him...At any rate it's the seaweed wrapping I can't get into sometimes...
My great aunt used to smoke 2 packs a day with her beloved terrier in her lap. The aunt lived to 93 years of age, the dog to 18 years. I think she embalmed both herself and the dog with all of the smoke; they died within two weeks of each other.
