An Australian mongrel fed on kangaroo and emu could be the oldest dog in the world. A vet in the outback town of Wilcannia has established that Jerry, a red heeler-bull terrier cross, will make it to 189 dog years when he hits 27 in August. Dogs rarely live past their 15th birthday, but Jerry shows little sign of fragility beyond some arthritis and worn teeth. "He is a remarkably solid dog for his age and has not got that wasted look that animals and old people get," the town's RSPCA vet, Honey Nelson, told the Melbourne Herald Sun.
"I think it's partly genetic, but also because he's a fit, roo-hunting dog who used to catch a lot of emu and roo. He could push on to 28."
The oldest dog on record was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who died in 1939 at the age of 29.
Jerry's owners, Aboriginal leader Waddie Smith and his wife Aileen, said he was a gentle creature who had never fathered pups.
"Everyone in Wilcannia knows him because he's never hurt anyone, although he does not like cats in the yard - they're his one enemy," said Mr Smith.
"He means a lot to me. He still comes for a bush walk with me. I take him nearly every night and he jumps up and wants to grab me on the arm like when he was younger."
I love Free Republic. Where else do you see stuff like this, with interesting and amusing commentary?
It's a big chicken and a two legged deer. Can't hunt them here. Emu, in America, they are farm animals, like ostrich. Substitute turkey.

There was a thread on dandelions on DU once. Or was that here? Probably here.
Sounds yummy to me.
Except for the chilli.
Seriously.
so you are saying if there's a dog around here somewhere that needs killin' I should feed it onions and grapes?
Odd though, b/c onions and grapes grow in my backyard, which is fenced, and the dogs snack on both every now and again.
Are you a Chef? these recipies sound great without the EMoo and the roo roo...They would proably make better pets than dinner on your plate....
My rats eat grapes at least twice a week...never hurt any of em. They make pretty good treats bc it's easy to get a rat sized portion, they eat them willingly, and they're not junk food...plus it's really cute watching them holding one in their paws and nibbling.
Grape Toxicity in Dogs, British Columbia Stock Dog Assn.
Looks like he gets lots of love, too, and that
doesn't hurt anyone!
And what's the record for cats? Must be above 20.
Unbelievable!
A guy doing some work for me a while back had a 19 year old dog who did nothing but sleep.
Since I'm almost at that stage myself I'll say no more!!!!
Thank *you* for the links you provided....:)
I didn't know exactly ~why~ the grapes were harmful to dogs but I keep such things away from my "kids", anyway.
Better safe than sorry.
Rats have an entirely different digestive system.
It's more complex like that of a human, rather than "short and fast" like a dog
Part of it may be that they're naturally omnivorous.
I never gave my rats chocolate or anything like that but I knew people who fed their rats entirely on chocolate, pizza and other "junk food" and those rats outlived mine which ate only a pricey "rat chow" supplemented with fresh vegetables.
Go figure.....:-\
That might be it...mine officially get a mix of dog kibble and rat food along with veggies, but when they beg cutely enough they seem to get little bites of things like pizza crust, bread, and even chicken occasionally too...all well recieved. I'm a huge sucker for beady beggin' eyes.
My last cat lived to be 23. She was a blue eyed beauty. A Siamese mix.
I don't recall the details, but the oldest cat lived to be 36.
Glock! Ping to the recipe, number 15! You know, just in case...
When I was a kid, we had a dog that was crazy for popcorn and grapes. Lived to be 18.
Unfortunately, neither ostrich nor kangaroo meat are kosher.
