Great piece, but makes it sound like Blacks can elect the Mayor all by themselves. Hardly true, even Mike Woo couldn't win with both Black and Hispanic backing against Riordan. This was another unmentioned effect of the riots, the rage of the populace bouncing out more of the same Tom Bradley type leadership in Woo, who was heavily favored to win until getting the kiss of death from Clinton. John & Ken at KFI didn't help, either.
Went to the same place all Federal monies to the Black community have gone since the 1960's. The race panderers!
Dang! Pretty serious sentence ... termination. Maybe he meant just to call the Governor?
I hope the rest of the reporting is more accurate than this statement. Rodney was driving a Yugo that would have been in trouble at anything over about 90. Although the media published the 110 to 115 quote, primarily for the purpose of creating a strawman that they could proceed to knock down, the actual report from officers Singer and Singer indicated Rodney's speed when overtaken was approximately 85.
The 110 figure comes from the narrative in their report in which they indicate that they pulled off the freeway onto an off/on ramp to let Rodney go by, then accelerated to catch him. In order to make up the difference between his speed and the zero mph start that they made, they accelerated to approx. 110 mph.
That's what the report said, and that's what the testimony at trial was. Rodney wasn't going 110, the CHP unit trying to catch up with him was.
This issue particularly irritates me because it bears a strong resemblance to the "Bush said there was an imminent threat" claim that the Demos have been making. He never said it, they know he never said it, but by getting people to believe he said it they then have something to attack him for. The "110 mph" claim was the Times equivalent of the "imminent threat" canard.
Well, if the natives burn their own neighborhoods down, I have to wonder who has insurance and how the insurer spread the liability out?
I think they would be bad, unless he came out strongly against them and urged support for the police (which he won't do).
Phil Hendries was telling his audience to shoot the bastards if they try to pull you out of your car. Boy, did that generate some phone calls!
thanks for the ping abigail2...good article. I think it's easy for people to take for granted how very difficult a job it is to be a cop and to be involved in a high speed chase where any number of people could be killed.
If it's been 13 years since the Rodney King riots, all those stolen TVs and stereos must be wearing out.
Time for a new shopping spree, I mean riot.
Wait until the radical Mexicans take over. The situation may right itself, at the expense of America.
Seems rather than hollering about how the LAPD handle people they are arresting that maybe the complainers would have questions about why the arestee was doing the things to get arrested.
Maybe it'll just go away bump for later.
