Kerry to Reach Out to 'People on the Right'

ALBUQUERQUE — Counting on his liberal base to stick by him, Sen. John F. Kerry plans to aggressively court more conservative voters with a message that emphasizes traditional values of service, faith and family.

Following his pick last week of a running mate with potential appeal to rural communities, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee said he was not content to target the narrow band of swing voters that the two parties were expected to fight over in roughly 20 swing states.

"I'm going to talk to people on the right," Kerry told The Times on Friday during a joint interview with his vice presidential pick, Sen. John Edwards. "I want to talk to conservatives."

As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights — all core Democratic issues — "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."

Indeed, Kerry seemed unconcerned about antagonizing his liberal supporters.

"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.

The Massachusetts senator has already begun his effort to broaden his political reach. During a recent swing through the Midwest, where he tramped around farms and toted a shotgun on a trap-shooting range, Kerry said that he represented "conservative values," and emphasized his personal opposition to abortion.

"When Democrats set out to fool people, they often succeed. Their long track record of winning elections they should lose attests to this."

Look at the bright side though; people who are stupid enough to vote for them are also shallow enough to vote on looks, and I don't care if Kerry publicly plays grabass with a dozen boy toys, it isn't going to improve his appearance a bit.

They WANT to believe that the Democrats have nominated a centrist, and only we can tell them it's a crock.

That part of your post I agree with.

As politically dysfuncional as the Democratic party is, there are many that look to it as the JFK (real JFK) party and refuse to give it up and opt to hope for it's improvement.

Edwards is playing people for fools, too.

"Daddy Edwards’ grassing got him promoted to supervisor, then to plant manager — and he finally resigned to start his own business as a consultant to the textile industry. As a Boston Globe profile of Edwards put it last year, the senator never “notes that his father was part of management . . . ‘John was more middle class than most of us,’” says Bill Garner, a high school friend and college roommate."

This is taken from the LA Weekly back in January, 2004 when he started his run and the left wanted to destroy him. Well, it just may.

John Edwards was never the hookworm riddled, barefoot, bean-eating, tar-shacked, tobacco road inhabitant he likes to play.

While Kerry's attempts to pass himself off as a regular Middle American are ludicrous, they are not to be laughed off. They must be countered. Many people are easily fooled, and many others wish to be fooled, by a Democrat. They WANT to believe that the Democrats have nominated a centrist, and only we can tell them it's a crock.

Excellent post, CP. We must never lose sight of the fact that a huge, and I mean HUGE, number of Americans continue to want to be fooled by the democrat party.

Don't know why this is true, but firmly believe it to be so. Roosevelt? John Kennedy? Who knows?

Bottom line is; do not become complacent, as I know not a single Freeper will, and work your butt off in every way possible to keep President Bush in office.

You already have talked to us. Your message could be summed up as "f*ck you".

I've hunted all kinds of critters and I never had to crawl on my belly to do it.
I've had to lay down from time to time, but crawling was not really part of the drill.

John Kerry lurks? Cool...

1. Hanoi John: release ALL of your DD-214 military records.

A "HERO" wouldn't cover up any UCMJ violations?

2. Flipper: quit hiding behind Teresa's skirt, release ALL the tax returns.

A Senator wouldn't cover up any illegal campaign finance monkeyshines?

Thank you

Yeah, we say the kick off show. Kerry, family value doesn't mean the net worth of your trophy wife. Or his he teh-ray-za's trophy husband? Either way, eeeeeeeewwwww

Imagine if a republican keep on saying the same thing on his stump speeches.

Unfortunately for him, most of the folks on the right are there because they have half a brain. They don't vote on who has the best hair, looks the coolest, or can quip the best touchy feely lines. They won't fall for a stupid last minute pack of lies like this.

Idiots come in all political stripes, and Kerry could grab more of the center using this tack.

That said, I'm totally sold. I mean, he hunts. No one who hunts could be a bad man.

What do y'all suppose he's hunting? Earthworms or boy-toys?

Looks to me that he's hunting wabbits. Even Elmer Fudd demonstrates better range safety. Or maybe this reach out is his way of doing the "it's duck season; no, it's rabbit season; no, it's duck season ..." The flip flopping has a nice familiar feel for him.

The transparency of all this is PATHETIC.
