VERSAILLES, France - A young woman and her baby were attacked in a suburban train near Paris on Saturday by unidentified men who drew swastikas on her stomach with a pen in what police said was an anti-Semitic assault.
The six attackers who were armed with knives clipped the 23-year-old woman's hair, and cut her t-shirt and pants before drawing three swastikas on her body.
The men of North African origin also overturned the pram with her baby of 13 months.
In the attack they robbed her backpack which contained her identity papers, a bank card and 200 euros ($250).
Police said the attackers erroneously assumed the woman was Jewish because she was living in Paris' posh 16th district.
"Only Jews live in the 16th district," one of the men was quoted as having said.
French President Jacques Chirac expressed his horror and condemned what he called "a shameful attack."
The perpetrators must be found, held accountable and condemned with the full severity of the law, a statement issued by his office said.
French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin asked police to find the attackers within the shortest possible time, his ministry said in a statement.
The attack was "all the more serious because it was marked by racism and anti-Semitism," he said.
All Jews in Europe, more than ever, must move to Israel as soon as possible.
The Muslim criminals were merely taking advantage of the French (European) anti-semitic atmosphere.

Except that most French jews are from North Africa as well....they went to France to get away from the violence of the Arabs.
Say what you want about France - the Sunday Boston Glop has a large article in the travel section describing how Americans are flocking to Paris and France. They report tourist travel by Americans to France has increased in each of the last two years despite all reports to the contrary. They do not identify a source for the statistics.
I keep thinking of an article I read in Vanity Fair last year; about the sephardic jewish parisian retired police detective-turned-bandleader who started his own unoffical organization to keep track of anti-semitic incidents and try to get the authorities involved. I wish I could remember the names, date and title but the main subject of the article was the varied responses to the crisis by french jews (not a monolithic entity by any means). According to the jewish ex-cop the french authorities go to obscene lengths not to list various assaults, vandalisms, arsons, etc. as "anti-semitic" so their official statistics are of little value.
I said it before, but if Bush really wants to humiliate Chiraq (and benefit the U.S.) he should set up a special expanded immigration quota for french jews.
I don't believe that especially if the writer is claiming the last 2 years when French government and travel industry has said tourism is down.
Where there is demand for crime, there is offer of crime.
The French, as usual, see a demand for crime coming from muslims, and they are offering with $$, politics and contracts the victims.
the French antisemitism is not soft and it is not merely for oil or annoyed at israel, it is openly selling Israel and Jews out for profit.
The writting is clearly on the wall and the French are ready to offer opportunities for crime where it is in demand.
