Abu Nidal Organization - international (used the name of Black September since 1974)

Abu Nidal Organization

pl:Organizacja Abu Nidala Created by a split from the Fatah in 1974, the Abu Nidal Organization (officially named Fatah - the Revolutionary Council) is an international organization named for its founder Abu Nidal. The group is also known as the Arab Revolutionary Brigades, Black September and the Revolutionary Organization of Socialist Muslims. It has an estimated members of several hundred.

It has carried out terrorist attacks in 20 countries, killing or injuring almost 900 persons. Targets include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Israel, moderate Palestinians, the PLO, and various Arab countries. Major attacks included the Rome and Vienna airports in December 1985, the Neve Shalom synagogue in Istanbul and the Pan Am Flight 73 hijacking in Karachi in September 1986, and the City of Poros day-excursion ship attack in Greece in July 1988. Suspected of assassinating PLO deputy chief Abu Iyad and PLO security chief Abu Hul in Tunis in January 1991. ANO assassinated a Jordanian diplomat in Lebanon in January 1994 and has been linked to the killing of the PLO representative there. The group has not attacked Western targets since the late 1980s.

The group maintained a presence in Iraq and Lebanon, its operations in Libya and Egypt were stopped by local authorities in 1999. The choking of funding from Middle Eastern governments caused the organization to slip away in obscurity.

The United States has claimed the group has received funding from the governments of Iraq, Libya, and (until 1987) Syria.

Booby-Trapped Bra may have Triggered Sri Lanka Suicide Blast

GG2.NET NEWS [13/07/2004] A WOMAN suicide bomber who set off a blast that killed herself and four policemen in Colombo may have been wearing a "bra bomb", a police investigator said today. The device exploded as the attacker, who appeared to be in her late twenties, was being searched by two women constables at a police station after being detained by guards of a government minister.

The two constables who escaped with injuries have said the woman had shown them her bare midriff to indicate she was not wearing an explosives-filled jacket usually worn by suicide bombers, inspector Palitha Siriwardena said.

"This points to the possibility that she was wearing a bra that had explosives in it," said Siriwardena, who is the chief inspector of the Kollupitiya police station where the blast occurred.

It would be the first case of its kind encountered by Sri Lankan police. Forensic experts were yet to make a formal report on the bombing but police said they were for the time being going on the basis that it was a bra bomb that could have been wired to go off when tampered with.

Usually suicide bomb jackets have a manual detonating device that would come down almost to waist level. No such detonating device was found on the woman who carried out the bombing last Wednesday, police said.

Tiger rebels denied involvement in the suicide bombing which the government said was intended for Hindu Religious Affairs Minister Douglas Devananda, a staunch opponent of the Tamil Tigers. The US and other diplomats here said despite the denials, the attack bore the hallmarks of the Tamil Tigers, who earlier this month commemorated 241 suicide bombers killed since 1987. Now that raised eyebrows here! Sounds like the baton has been passed.
