Backup electrical systems failed to kick in

A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained – six days later.

Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

I think anything would be possible for them to try.

Wondering if Northwest allows pilots to carry weapons? I've gotten out of the loop on that issue.

Components of IEDs [improvised explosive devices]can be smuggled on to an aircraft, concealed in either clothing or personal carry-on items … and assembled on board. In many cases of suspicious passenger activity, incidents have taken place in the aircraft's forward lavatory."

This is what we have been worrying about and discussing

I'm generally not in favor of profiling, not because I'm PC, but because I believe that the TSA should scutinize everyone boarding an airplane, from babies to blue haired grandmothers in wheel chairs. Nevertheless, there are situations that obviously demand a greater level of scrutiny and intervention, and 14 relatively young ME men flying on the same plane and then acting unusual by any standard throughout the flight should have resulted in an unscheduled landing. And while I realize that air marshalls are not supposed to reveal themselves until the situation requires that they act, I wonder whether that point had been reached on this particular flight. And what about the other passengers who observed the suspiscious behavior? At some point, we have to take control of the situation.

Recognizing Terrorist Activity (Basics)
Signs of terrorist activity may include:

Someone bragging or talking about plans to harm citizens in violent attacks or who claims membership in a terrorist organization that espouses killing innocent people.

Suspicious packages, luggage, or mail that have been abandoned in a crowded place like an office building, an airport, a school, or a shopping center.

Suspicious letter or package that arrives in your mailbox. (Stay away from the letter or package and don’t shake, bump or sniff it; wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.)

Someone suspiciously exiting a secured, non-public area near a train or bus depot, airport, tunnel, bridge, government building, or tourist attraction.

Any type of activity or circumstance that seems frightening or unusual within the normal routines of your neighborhood, community, and workplace.

Someone suspiciously watching, mapping or photographing a landmark, airport, tunnel, bridge, government building, or tourist attraction.

Someone unfamiliar loitering in a parking lot, government building, or around a school or playground.

Someone using or threatening to use a gun or other weapon, place a bomb, or release a poisonous substance into the air, water, or food supply.

Strange odors, smoke, fire, or an explosion.

Abandoned vehicles.

Flashback: FBI: Terrorists may use sports, arts visas to enter U.S.

Originally published on April 1, 2004

WASHINGTON — U.S. officials have received intelligence indicating terrorists might attempt to slip into the United States using cultural, arts or sports visas, according to the FBI.

The bureau issued a bulletin to 18,000 state and local law enforcement agencies nationwide warning about the potential misuse of P-visas, one of several types granted by the State Department for people visiting the United States for artistic, cultural or athletic purposes.

“Recent intelligence indicates that terrorist groups may be interested in exploiting cultural visa programs to infiltrate operatives and support network into the United States,” says the bulletin, described Thursday to The Associated Press by a federal law enforcement official.

The bulletin, sent Wednesday, does not identify the source of the intelligence and contains no specific, corroborated evidence that any terrorists have entered the country this way.

Unfriggin' believable story. I'm still shaking after reading that. It's hard to believe that this is where we are almost 3 years after 9/11.

I guess I'll post the recipes on the thead, since I have had several requests, unless anyone objects since it is not directly terrorism related (although it might be, if people don't cook their beans properly...). If people don't want it on the thread, anyone who wants recipes can freepmail me.

Was it a tanker? The black thing trailing from the plane could've been the refueling line.
