A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained – six days later.

Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

Nine crew missing off Indonesia after pirate attack

LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) - Nine crew members of a ship were missing after pirates threw them overboard in Indonesian waters, just a few days before military patrols begin in the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's strategic shipping lanes, an ocean crime watchdog said on Wednesday.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) said the attack occurred on a tug called the Global Semesta Satu in the Bangka Straits, south of the Strait of Malacca on Sunday.(snip)

Rumsfeld Directs Missile Defense to Operate Oct. 1

WASHINGTON — U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has quietly ordered elements of a long-range missile defense system to begin operating on Oct. 1, four weeks before the 2004 presidential election, according to a U.S. military official (see GSN, July 2).

Rumsfeld’s order appears to be a closely held secret. Representatives from the Office of Secretary of Defense, the Missile Defense Agency, and the Strategic Command contacted by Global Security Newswire either insisted that no such order exists, said they were unaware of one, or referred questions to other sections of the Defense Department.

Rumsfeld issued the directive, called a “warning order,” on an undisclosed date following a determination by the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the system’s readiness and need for activation, according to the official, who requested anonymity.

“A message has been sent out into the field to commence initial defensive operations on 1 October of this year,” the official said July 2.

The order schedules initial operation of ground-based interceptors, radar and other equipment a month and a day before the Nov. 2 Election Day, when voters will decide whether to give President George W. Bush a second term. It implements Bush’s less-specific December 2002 classified directive to “begin deployment of a set of missile defense capabilities in 2004.”

In March, U.S. Representative Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.) accused the administration of timing the initial operations of the system, still under development and missing key technologies, for political purposes. Then-Missile Defense Agency Director Lt. Gen Ronald Kadish disputed that, saying the Sept. 30 goal for preparing the system for initial operations was set for “internal management purposes” and was not politically motivated (see GSN, March 26).

Another agency official said recently that “vulnerability,” not politics is driving the deployment.

“A lot of people think we have missile defense capability now. We don’t.  What this will allow us to do is having a system that we are still testing that we know has some capability — some is better than nothing at this point — to defend ourselves if somebody shoots at us,” said the agency’s Deputy for Test and Assessment Brig. This is brother Duduman's prophecy received April 22, 1996. I prayed, then went to bed. I was still awake, when suddenly I heard a trumpet sound. A voice cried out to me, "Stand!" War train: Missiles, warheads for Syria in N. Korean rail blast

...The sources said North Korea had completed work on some of the missiles before the catastrophic train explosion in North Korea. But the train that exploded did not contain biological or chemical weapons agents, they said. Instead, they said the train contained Scud D missiles, warheads and fuel propellants.

Although North Korea has maintained official silence about the April 22 rail blast in a North Korean town near the Chinese border, newspapers in South Korea continue to publish reports about the incident, Middle East Newsline reported.

On Thursday, the opposition Future Korea weekly quoted an anonymous North Korean expert who said Syria has ordered a "large number" of Scud missiles with biological and chemical warheads. The North Korean said the Scud engines were produced at the so-called "January 8 Factory" in Kaechon while the missiles were assembled in the Shin-eum-ri facility in Pyongyang.

The newspaper quoted the North Korean as saying that the BW and CW warheads were assembled at the Namheung Chemical Factory and were onboard the train when it exploded in what was described as an accident. He said the casing of the missiles were produced at Factory No. 26 in Kanggye.

"These details on North Korean WMD trafficking have been of great interest because the U.S. government is expected to take extraordinary measures against North Korea over the next few months," the newspaper said.

"There is considerable evidence that North Korea had completed BW and CW warhead components for shipment to Syria in May," an Asian intelligence source who monitors North Korea said. "The shipment was to have been the first of several batches of missile and nonconventional warhead components."

The train blast on April 22 in the Ryongchon station in North Korea's North Pyongan province killed scores of people, including at least 10 Syrian technicians, the sources said. They said the Syrians aboard the trainload of missiles and warhead components were members of the state-owned Center for Scientific Research and Studies, which helps administer Syria's nonconventional weapons program...

I have long believed the stories of ties between NK and Syria, but this is the first I recall of hearing that 10 Syrian techs were killed in the blast. I found several other articles on Google that mentioned it as well.

IIRC, there was a report within days that stated the first people on the scene were wearing protective gear, and removed bodies from the wreck that were also wearing protective gear. They were also said to have removed "equipment".

Yes, one of the articles I just read said that the bodies were removed surreptitiously when a Syrian relief effort was allowed into the area.

Sorry I'm just now bringing this up, but I'm digging around looking for solid mention of ties between all our enemies. An expansion on the Axis of Evil, if you will.

Al-Zarqawi Claims Attack on Iraq Leader

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Al-Qaida-linked militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi issued a Web site statement Wednesday claiming responsibility for an attack on a home used by Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim prime minister.


The statement, posted on a site known for such claims, promised to pursue Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, who is seen by Iraq's insurgents as a collaborator with President Bush (news - web sites) and the 160,000 foreign troops in Iraq.


"We would like to break the bad news to you — Allawi — that if the death rockets have missed you ... our quiver, thank God, is full of death arrows," said the statement, which carried al-Zarqawi's signature.
