HOMELAND INSECURITY
Backup electrical systems failed to kick in
A mysterious power failure at Logan Airport that delayed dozens of flights for more than five hours has still not been explained six days later.
Airport officials insist airline security was not compromised during the blackout Monday at Logan International's Terminal E, but backup electrical systems failed to kick in as they are programmed under such circumstances.

That is a good reminder for us to be careful here on TM.
But I won't let it stop what we are doing.
Yes, but to read carefully and not add your own wording into it. It only says assistance. Not financial assistance. To assist someone is to help. I take that to mean physical help. They need bodies to volunteer in an area where it is hard to find that kind of help.
There are very few people who will take initiative here for "dirty work" let alone for jobs that require them to be in harms way. Its a very different breed of people than is the "norm" here. I applaud Cal for volunteering. I also come from a family of "volunteers" and public service. Being a FireDepartment "brat" I tend to be the one at work now that clues people into the dangers and volunteers for security assistance at our company.
You would be amazed at how many people do not think it can happen to them or where we are. The company I work for is the only US company that has equipment to identify anthrax in mail rooms and post offices all over the country. We work at the House of Reps, Congress and at NBC. We had over 700 people at the WTC and our people were the ones sick with Anthrax when it was discovered in 2001 at those various locations. And yet, they still think its not a danger to them.
By Mark Zeigler UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER July 13, 2004 The biggest issue at this summer's Athens Olympics might not be security breaches or unfinished venues or transportation glitches or doping scandals, but what happened yesterday across central and southern Greece:
A massive power outage.
It struck at 12:39 p.m. Greek time (2:39 a.m. PDT), paralyzing metropolitan Athens and its 5 million residents and locales as far away as 175 miles, plus several entire islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas.
Greek authorities said 70 percent of power was restored in about an hour and Athens was back on line within three hours, which, they noted, marked significant progress over previous outages of this magnitude. Olympic venues were largely unaffected since they have backup generators.
But everything around them was, and the ensuing chaos and inconvenience raised further questions about Greece's readiness to host the world's largest sporting event Aug. 13-29.
Downtown Athens, already clogged with midday traffic, became instant gridlock when stoplights went out. The subway stopped, and thousands of passengers had to walk through tunnels to stations. Hundreds of people were stuck in elevators. Air conditioners shut off across the Attica region, and it was 104 degrees.
Then there was what happened on the new metro link to the airport. The grand opening of the electrically powered line was yesterday, and a collection of government ministers and journalists boarded a train from downtown at 11 a.m. It broke down short of the airport due to an unrelated power problem and had to be towed in by a diesel engine.
A ceremony was held at the airport, and everyone reboarded the train for the maiden voyage back to Athens. Then the power outage hit. This time, according to the Athens News Agency, those aboard had to walk through a sweltering tunnel to a nearby station.
It was unclear what caused the crippling outage. The Public Power Corporation cited the increased use of air conditioners because of the searing July heat wave and the poor condition of the state-run power grid. Government officials blamed "mismanagement" at the power company, which is a major Olympic sponsor.......
what if they are where the cells are gathering/training and not targets in particular.
Hi, everyone. I have a prayer request. I found out this morning my husbands liver is not doing as well as we thought. He has hep c from a transfusion in the 70's. It caused him to develop cirrhosis by the time we found out he had it. Anyway he may have now developed liver cancer. We won't know for a couple of weeks but he/we could sure use the prayers. Thanks a lot. No need to respond on the thread, just pray, please. Thanks.
Speaking of that RC list, I was surprised not to see any Ohio cities included.
bump for prayers! godspeed to full recovery.

Power knocked out in parts of Tallahassee
Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Power was knocked out Tuesday to a large number of customers in Tallahassee, but officials weren't sure why.
Several traffic lights in the city were also out and officials were trying to figure out what happened, city spokesman Bill Behenna said.
"We don't know anything beyond the fact that it is widespread and potentially affecting a large part of the city," Behenna said.
Amid reports of power being out in a number of areas separated by several miles, city officials were setting up a command post at a local fire station.
The temperature in downtown Tallahassee Tuesday afternoon was in the high 90s.

Sure, Davey. That could be true. They will not ever be able to tell us everything.
Just in time for big storms coming their way. DW looked up weather immediately, thinking it may have been an issue.
I agree with you. Let's exterminate all left wings everywhere!
Yes, just in time, unforunately.
I am actually waiting to hear if they had some storms in Tallahassee as they normally do at this time of the year and this time of day in and around Tallahassee, and if this is what prompted the power loss. But I think if the power loss was due to such normal storms the articles would have cited that.
This power outtage could be a critical element to any terror attack by cutting off communication and tying up traffic to responding forces. Wouldn't surprise me if this wasn't a dry run of some sort.
But what about the birds? That'd be a lot of transplant surgery.
BTW, LA and Chicago are sister cities to Athens, Greece, according to my DW.
"officials were trying to figure out what happened" I don't think it was a storms. I'm pretty sure UFO activity is involved.
offering it up.
I had not heard of that Asian warning, jerseygirl.
But I vaguely recall that there was some type of Russian female (fortune teller?) who supposedly said that there would be an attack on the U.S. before 911. Does anyone remember soemthing about that also? Maybe it was disproven already, I will do some searching tonight if I can.
