Agents forced him to present his ID, even after he explained why he was taking pictures. All of this happened while other tourists continued to take their own pictures of the Locks. Homeland Security Special Agent McNamara also took Mr. Spiers's photo and told him to call him before returning to the Locks. Who knows where the photo is going to end up or what databases Mr. Spiers has now been entered into.

Good, we are at war. The agents acted appropriately.

Perhaps because the student was using a professional-type camera, but the tourists were using Polaroids.

We need to get on with winning it. People will endure restrictions for a purpose and as long as they see a serious effort to defeat the enemy they will put up with it. But nearly half the country thinks there is no war on at all and is not eager to bring matters to a conclusion which will result in the worst of worlds: sacrifice wihtout apparent purpose and indefinite restriction with no light at the end of the passage.

the country doesn't feel the war because they are not being asked to make sacrifices. Right now only military families are sacrificing. I don't see a change in that unless there is a major catastrophe, and I don't really wish that.

This will be a very long war, time to get use to it.

Looks like there might be more to this story. Seattle is full of leftists and anti-Americans. Throw in a left of left photography instructor that sends a student out to look as suspicious as possible. Patriot act challenge, lawsuit, or just the usual harassment?

The teacher or professor is somewhat at fault.
How exact was the assignment? Were the students warned away from "targets"?

I was taking a photography class and we had to take a pictures of a row of something at different f-stops to show the changing depth of field. I chose a row of lampposts at a federal building. When I was done {and I was shooting low to the ground, with the building in the backgrond], a guard came out and said that some DEA guys, working on the weekend, wanted to know what I was doing.

I told the guard what I was doing, and I was very polite. I offered to show my ID, but he was apparently satisfied by my explanation. To tell the truth, I was a bit dismayed that he backed off so easily. If I had been him, I would have taken my name and address, at minimum. And had I been me, which I was, I would have given it with no argument

Well, Flash, you sound like a good, upstanding patriotic citizen.
In other words, you sound like most of us.
Thanks for your post.

Please read the student's blog before posting comments. He did nothing wrong.

This is another case of local police and Homeland Security people acting like Keystone Cops.

These are the same idiots that require a 90-year-old grandmother to submit to a body search at airport security.

It's all for show. Pathetic.

"He did nothing wrong."

I got stopped by two cops in Washington D.C. as I was calibrating some funny looking science equipment (including a 12-foot PVC pipe slung along my hip) in a field next to my hotel across the street from Andrews Air Force Base.

The cops blocked in my large Ryder rental truck and came around back with hands on their guns and asked for my I.D. I asked them what this was about (kind of knowing what it was!) and they said "Just show us your I.D."

I gave them my I.D. and the rental truck papers. The one guy checked it out and came back later and asked what I was doing. I told him and he said "working with this stuff near Andrews less than a year after 9/11 isn't the smartest thing to be doing. Don't do it - you're just making people nervous."

I said "You're right - sorry. And thanks for all your hard work".

Then - I got on with my life.

Yeah I could have said "I DID NOTHING WRONG!". I could have argued it was just science equipment. I paid for my room and I can be on the hotel property. You're profiling me 'cuz I have a Ryder van, long hair and a bandanna and a scruffy beard!!! You got NO RIGHT to ask me for my I.D. - I'm an AMERICAN CITIZEN you fascist pig. I'm going to put up a WEBSITE and let everyone know the fascist state that AMERIKA has become - what's your badge number? (Actually I did note his name and number when he first talked to me - not knowing where this might go!)
I read his entire website - I think this guy has issues. (His three pages of text look like my last paragraph).
