The Weekly Standard

Trouble in South Dakota . . .
. . . for Tom Daschle. Local bloggers are going to make his reelection fight tougher.
by Hugh Hewitt

What does South Dakota think of Michael Moore and his slanders on American troops and lies about American motives? We will find out in November, because South Dakota's Senator Tom Daschle has embraced Moore--literally.

That's what Time magazine reported this week. "Two weeks ago, at the Washington premier, Moore sat a few rows behind Daschle," the magazine's cover story recounted about the D.C. opening of Fahrenheit 9/11. "Afterward, says Moore, 'he gave me a hug and said he felt bad and that we were all gonna fight from now on.'"

There are three great blogs covering the Tom Daschle-John Thune senate race--coverage that is necessary because the state's leading paper, the Argus Leader is in the tank for Daschle and hasn't even bothered to report the Daschle-Moore love-fest. The paper's lead political reporter is a long-time Daschle booster whose column on Moore, his movie, and Daschle omits any reference to the Moore-Daschle huggy moment.

But the South Dakota blogs are all over the Daschle endorsement of Moore's assault on America. Daschle v. Thune, South Dakota Politics, and Sibby Online present real reporting, not incumbent boosterism, and their readerships are growing as the race between Daschle and the John Thune heats up.

The influence of blogging on politics is nowhere more obvious than in South Dakota. Tom Daschle has long sold himself as a moderate to South Dakota voters, and has done so with the assistance of a very friendly local press. But now the locals get the news via a stream of serious reporters trawling the national press and internet sites for the real news on the hyper-partisan Daschle. The result is that, for the first time in Daschle's political life, he will have to run on his record, not on what he presents as his record.

John Thune barely lost a race against incumbent Tim Johnson in 2002, and there was controversy around the vote. This time Thune is running with George W. Bush at the top of the ticket, and, given enough money, he should be able to hold Daschle accountable. The embrace of Moore is just more fuel for the political fire, the smoke of which cannot be obscured by friendlies in newsrooms. Reporters everywhere are getting a message: Agenda journalism isn't safe anymore. If you spin the facts, there are bloggers waiting to expose your partisanship. And the candidate you have been covering for.

Those are great!

And what's up with all the hands on one another, kissy-face closeness between these two gents (I use the term loosely). Kerry stands closer head-to-head to Edwards than he does to Ta-ray-zuh.

It's activating my gag reflex.

It would be nice if we could get some pictures of Da$$hole hugging the blob.

That would make a terrific billboard in Da$$hole's home state.

This Minnesotan sent Thune a contribution two days ago. Here's hoping it helps send Daschle packing!

THUNE'S CAMPAIGN NEEDS TO MAKE A COMMERCIAL MENTIONING THIS AND QUOTING MOORE IN SHOWING HOW OUT OF TOUCH DASSHOLE IS. THIS NEEDS TO BE REPEATEDLY BROUGHT UP AND I HOPE THUNE WILL CONTINUE TO RAISE THIS ISSUE TO THE EXTREMIST THAT TOM DASSHOLE IS.

I absolutely agree.

I've put my money where my mouth is.

I gave $25.00 to Thune! And I'm not a wealthy guy either.

If you're a Freeper and want to make a difference, send some cash (any amount) to John Thune's campaign.

Here's the address:

John Thune for US Senate
PO Box 3308
Sioux Falls SD 57101

OR if you want to an on-line donation, go here:

https://www.rapiddonor.com/JohnThune/

Remember, South Dakota is a small state and your contribution will go a lot further.

Bush Stops For Refreshment, Provides Great Photo Op

RALEIGH, N.C. -- President George W. Bush made an unscheduled stop Wednesday on his way back to the airport after attending a fundraiser in Raleigh.

A lemonade stand and two little girls brought the motorcade to a halt.

It was a perfect photo opportunity for Bush -- stopping to buy lemonade on a sizzling summer afternoon and giving two young entrepreneurs a day they never will forget...

Glad you liked that one...
...because here is ANOTHER "Hugh Hewitt-related" non-Daschle thread. :o)
(Hugh interviewed Doctor ZIn several months ago about his support for the Iranian resistance.)

You can watch Doctor ZIn getting interviewed on IRANIAN TV here, in case you missed reading about this massive pro-Iranian-freedom rally in Los Angeles on AMERICAN TV yesterday:

Update on the LA Demonstration in Support of the Iranian People!

I had a great time with a few thousand of my Iranian friends in Los Angeles, California.

The loved President Bush! And there were lines of people changing their registration.

The people were chanting "Thank you President Bush... Shame on You Tony Blair."

They were asking people to support the imprisioned students in Iran.

They had a plane flying the Iranian flag.

They staged a mock execution as they are preformed by the Iranian regime.

I had my own sign calling for the world leaders to take a stand, and gave a plug for the FreeRepublic.com.

I saw lots of friends.

And a lot of support by the followers of the Shah and his son Reza.

They even had Iranian currency (Rials) in anticipation of a change of regime.

Finally, I ended the night on XTV where I did an interview that was broadcast into Iran!

I even spent some time chatting with Iranians in Iran

All in all, it was a great evening.

I just pray that the people of Iran will be able to stand up to the regime in the next few days.

DoctorZin
