July 6, 2004 (Portage, Wisconsin) Two Amtrak trains heading to Chicago have been stopped because of a police investigation.
It happened near the town of Portage, Wisconsin, which is north of Madison.
The trains involved are the Empire Builder number 8 from Seattle, and number 28 from Portland.
The two trains meet in Spokane and head into Chicago together.
All of the passengers were taken off the trains and boarded chartered buses to continue their trip to Chicago.
There is no word yet on what caused police to stop the trains.

Is that "The Madison" -- sister city to Rafah, Gaza? Did the train stop in Madison?
Well, I don't know if that's official, but probably an accurate statement. Although, there is strong support for Israel in Madison because of the big Jewish population from the East coast.
The train doesn't stop there. It cuts north of the city and goes into Milwaukee's station for a while, then heads straight south into Chicago, running just a couple of miles from the lakeshore.

Portage is about an hour south of us.
They interviewed each passenger?
Bomb specialist to 9 month old: "Did you plant a bomb?"
9 month old: "Goo-goo-daa-dee-boo..."
Bomb specialist: "No kidding around now..."

I think there was a stretch of interstate for nearly 100 miles where there were no exits or gas stations. It sure is PURTY country right there, ain't it! That slope coming down off the Swell has to be the wildest ever on an Interstate!

Ahh Amtrak all the pleasures of taking the bus with the expense of flying. The best of both worlds!

I think there was a stretch of interstate for nearly 100 miles where there were no exits or gas stations. Salina to Green River. We drive it every holiday season. Apparently, at just over 100 miles, it's the longest service-free stretch on the interstate system.

Salina to Green River. We drive it every holiday season. I drove it right before Christmas last year at night.
It was clear, and being Utah, very dry, so I could see LOTS of stars.
I can't wait to get out there again.
