July 6, 2004 (Portage, Wisconsin) Two Amtrak trains heading to Chicago have been stopped because of a police investigation.
It happened near the town of Portage, Wisconsin, which is north of Madison.
The trains involved are the Empire Builder number 8 from Seattle, and number 28 from Portland.
The two trains meet in Spokane and head into Chicago together.
All of the passengers were taken off the trains and boarded chartered buses to continue their trip to Chicago.
There is no word yet on what caused police to stop the trains.
? bump
I'll bet the cops stopped both trains in an attempt to solve the age old mistory "Two trains leave for Chicago at the same time.................."

I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count....
lol, I hope they have better luck solving than I did. :)
hilarious!
Hmm...the Empire Builder. Goes screaming past my house outside of Milwaukee at about 80 mph. Nice looking train too - observation cars, etc.
Interesting.
I also heard that there was a ground stop at O'hare airport. Does anyone have any info on what precipitated the ground stop?

Weather, most likely. Rain & thunderstorms around here have a tendency to do that. The sky got really dark today. My family and I sat on the tarmac at O'Hare once for 3 hours because of a thunderstorm system. My 3 kids were all under the age of 4 at that time. Ask me how much fun I had that day........... ;-)

Now we will never know the answer!

And you lived to tell about it! Amazing!
How much fun did you have that day?
Went from Chicago to Seattle by train in the mid 80's. It was quite a trip, my kids had a blast.

Amtrak evacuation in Wisconsin for police investigation after stop in Twin Cities
Updated: 07/06/2004 06:03:51 PM - VIDEO
An Amtrak train that made a stop in St. Paul earlier today has been evacuated in Portage, Wisconsin for what is being called a police investigation. The train originated in Seattle and is on the way to Chicago.
Passengers aboard were taken to a nearby school. Amtrak says if the investigation lasts much longer, they will be transported by bus to Chicago. Amtrak says it will remove all passenger belongings before the buses leave.
We spoke with passengers aboard from the Twin Cities. Greg Luce says most people are calm, but Amtrak is not telling the passengers much about the situation.
