What class! Next thing he'll be saying black RUN fast because they are used to running FROM the cops!
Is Jackson making a pitch for Rodney King?
And another thing that strikes me as *impossible* about this statement, there's more to NASCAR than driving fast. If Jesse Jackson weren't such an illiterate himself he might have couched this statement in more NASCAR correct terms. How about "Negroes can design, engineer and build fast cars." Or, "Negroes can man a pit crew just as skillfully as white boys." How about "Negroes can turn wrenches and build engines and bodies?"
Seems like to me, if someone really wanted to welcome blacks into NASCAR then the funding might go to a full team - not just some showboating for a driver. And on that note, how many *new* black fans would be drawn to NASCAR races to watch a race with an all-black racing team? Heck, I'm a white girl and if I had the money I'd think about supporting a team of top-notch black mechanics, pit crew and driver. It would have to be popular and bring in a bunch of new fans. Think of the money I could make off souvenier t-shirts and caps! What's wrong with that kind of idea for promoting a "blacker" image in NASCAR?
That jumped out at me too. I thought the word "negro" was taboo now (although Dr. King used it all of the time).
"How about "Negroes can design, engineer and build fast cars." Or, "Negroes can man a pit crew just as skillfully as white boys." How about "Negroes can turn wrenches and build engines and bodies?"
How about "Negroes can skillfully negotiate their cars past
those in front of them"?
It takes more than just "drive cars fast".
But, your point is very well taken. There are many aspects
to NASCAR...not just driving. But, the drivers are the
***stars***.
I agree wholeheartedly! LOL
I have a bias toward the engineering and design aspect of racing because as a designer by profession I have dreamed of working for a NASCAR team for years! I'd gladly pass on the glory of getting to drive for even a chance at working on one of those design teams.
Okay, okay, I admit, I would rather drive... but designing would be *almost* there! :-)
I am just pea green with envy! :-)
You go girl!!! That is AWESOME!!!
I don't know what exactly the criteria is for NASCAR to feature any drivers, but I'm sure that it has something to do with being great drivers or getting good sponsors, and going out of their way to feature more black drivers would be unfair to the others who have struggled to the top of this sport.
Pyne was unequivocal in his defense of NASCAR's decision to support Jackson. "I would point out that there are a number of Fortune 500 companies that support Rainbow/PUSH and every other major sport America supports, or a number of major sports entities, support Rainbow PUSH," Pyne said.
And I would point out that those Fortune 500 companies were strong armed into it by this racial extortionist, just like NASCAR.
"Eric Dezenhall, a D.C.-based corporate consultant, said Mr. Jackson's modus operandi is more of a "protection racket rather than a shakedown, because he doesn't really make threats."
"Nowadays, a corporation would rather be accused of child molestation than racism," Mr. Dezenhall said. "

""In a PR fight, whoever attacks wins, whoever defends loses," Dezenhall says. "Always attack, and support that attack with a shameless spectacle anchored in emotion, allegation and victimhood. This doesn't require money; it requires audacity. My clients are the biggest companies in the world, and they live in mortal terror of a nun with a guitar showing up at a shareholders meeting. Corporations fear appearing ungentle and almost never challenge anyone cloaked in vulnerability, which is why they've paid Jesse Jackson whatever he wants over the years NOT to use the R-word."

Rose, I just gotta ping you to this... just in case you have any input.
I may be totally wrong, but wasn't Paul Russo a black guy? He was one of those who drove Andi Granatelli's legendary Novi Special at Indy years ago.

I certainly hope that NASCAR will sever all ties from this racist. /sarcasm
NASCAR's sponsorship of the sports luncheon at this week's conference is contrary to previous reports indicating that NASCAR had ended its financial support of Jackson and his organizations in 2003 because of negative public pressure.
Apparently getting bitch slapped by NASCAR fans the first time around wasn't enough when they were giving away money to that huckster. They looking for another boycott?
He forgot to mention the fact that the cars were probably stolen.
They can drive LOUD cars too.
I can hear their music 6 blocks away sometimes.
Is the term Negro making a comeback?
Race drivers boycott event over flag flag (Driver would be DQ'd for flying flag on hauler)
