More than 20 years ago, Eric Hoffer said: "Nowhere at present is there such a measureless loathing of their country by educated people as in America."

That present continues...I would put "educated" in quotes.

"Cars and guns are both instruments and symbols of personal independence -- and both are targets of hostility and even hatred by those who are convinced that they can run other people's lives better than those people can run their own lives."

That explains the Left perfectly.

As we celebrate both our country's independence and our individual independence on the Fourth of July, we should never forget that this independence is galling to those who want us to be dependent on them.

Foreign and domestic.

Those who are constantly looking for the "root causes" of poverty, of crime, and of other national and international problems act as if prosperity and law-abiding behavior were so natural that it is their absence that has to be explained.

That quote's a keeper. If you want to dig deeper, the reason for their blindness is they don't understand the concept of Original Sin.

What an excellent article!

America is the exception, not the rule. Today, most of the world lives in poverty. Much of the world is governed by corrupt individuals. Despotism is all most people know.

But this isn't anything new! Most of the world has ALWAYS been poor, lacking freedoms Americans take for granted. Terrorism and socialism are the "isms" that hurt the world today, but you don't have to go far back to find communism and fascism, and go a little farther and feudalism was the ism that hurt the world. There have always been "isms" to persecute people and deny them their rights. But in America, no person or ism could take these rights away because the people truly believed them to be God-given.

That is why it is such a danger that the new ism, secularism, threatens to take hold of America. When you deny God, denial of God-given rights is of course the next step.

America is separate from the rest of the world. Liberals think that's a bad thing. But when the rest of the world wallows in poverty, underfed and underappreciated, swapping cruel regimes every decade, America's separateness doesn't seem like such a bad thing.

Sowell speaks of change. Some people advocate change for its own sake. And it is true, those people look down on "conservatives", who by nature wish to CONSERVE, not change. It's not that America can't afford to make some changes. But the only people qualified to advocate change are those who truly appreciate what it is about America that CANNOT be changed.

Good article. Thanks for posting it.

If one word rings out, and echoes around the world, when America is mentioned, that word is Freedom. But what does freedom mean?

Man's greatest concept. The ONLY concept that buttresses the reality of life. A NON-DIVISIVE concept. Under its conceptual umbrella all other concepts are welcome...but are they??? anti-freedom ??? or anti-life???

The people who hate America admire Canada. They want us to become a country dependent on government handouts. In other words, to cease being who we are.

"Note that it is not the downtrodden masses but the pampered Ph.D.s who most vent their spleen at the country that protects and indulges them."

Spoiled ingrates.

Good article. Even after reading it I can't understand why they would hate this country. They have warped minds.

"It means that hundreds of millions of ordinary human beings live their lives as they see fit--regardless of what their betters think. That is fine, unless you see yourself as one of their betters as so many intellectuals do."

What a great article. Perfect analysis of liberal/intellectual snobbery as the cause of leftist hatred of our country. A must read BUMP.

AH but this erudite writer missed the opportunity to answer the question...for the answer is the same to both questions...America is great and different from anywhere else in the world PRECISELY because we started as a people and a nation that understood our rights came from God ...we were not a government looking for a nation ( and that's from Ronald Reagagn folks). That is why the free enterprise system works. It is why we are hated by the rest of the world/ AND it is why we MUST fight this war against Islamofascists and win.
