Summery seersucker well-suited to senators (US senators stage bipartisan seersucker suit day)

WASHINGTON — Are y'all set for the sartorial splendor of today's summer seersucker spectacle in the U.S. Senate?

"It's a Southern thing," said Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), organizer of the bipartisan show of stripes. "But it has spread far and wide — from sea to shining sea."

On the Senate floor, the cool, crisp cotton fabric will be the fashion order of the day.

And the seersucker suits will cross gender as well as party lines. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) has arranged for women senators to join their male colleagues in this rite of the season.

"Things have been pretty tough in the Senate lately. She thought it would help to inject a little levity," said Howard Gantman, Feinstein's press spokesman.

Lott, who favors white bucks with his seersucker suits, coordinated the celebration. It was originally scheduled for last Thursday, he said, but some of his female colleagues asked for a delay. More tailoring time was needed, he surmised.

"We've done this a couple of times before," Lott said. "Those of us from the Deep South have always worn seersucker suits in summer. But senators from other parts of the country like them, too."

Seersucker suits are favorites of veterans like Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) and newcomers like Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.), ("perhaps the best dressed man in the Senate," opined Lott, who is no fashion slouch himself).

In past decades, Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy and the late Rep. Claude Pepper (D-Fla.) were among the capital's seersucker enthusiasts.

There's a good reason. Though coats and ties are de rigueur on Capitol Hill, summer highs average near 90, with humidity to match.

Well, it's certainly a refreshing change of pace from Barney Frank!

Barf!

That dude is as obnoxious to look at as he is to listen to.

As always, ye shall be thwarted. Just not right now. Lord Lavrenti must do the laundry and prepare for his date with destiny.
