FBI urges vigilance for July 4

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A constant stream of intelligence indicating that al Qaeda wants to strike the United States this summer or fall has led federal officials to urge increased vigilance during the Independence Day weekend, but there is no specific threat of an attack timed to the holiday.

"On tuesday there was a knock on my door and when I answered it there was an empoyee of the county government taking a survey of how many animals I had. When asked why, she replyed that FEMA and Emergency Management at the county level have instructed them to see who has animals in case there is some sort of a disaster and farmers/animal owners can't get food to their animals.

This may not be what it first appears to be. Last summer during the peak of wild fires in S. Cal, the animal shelters were overwhelmed by the number of rescued animals brought to them. Having pets running around a disaster site of any kind is very disruptive. Getting an idea of the numbers and types could help in planning how much kibbles and bits to bring in after a disaster strikes. Thus I would look at it as a common sense measure.

As has been so well expressed in previous posts, we need to be extra alert, especially in places where people congregate (Disney land, other tourist sites) as they could be targets of opportunity for an Palistanian-type car bomb attack.

Report: Seattle refineries on terror alert

Seattle, WA, Jul. 2 (UPI) -- Refineries along Puget Sound were on alert Friday due to concerns about possible terrorism.

KOMO-TV, Seattle, said Friday three suspicious incidents possibly indicating refineries were under surveillance or targeted for a break-in prompted the Department of Homeland Security to pass the word to police and refinery security officials.

KOMO said no specific threat had been received, however, security has been noticeably tighter in the area where gasoline for nearly the entire Pacific Northwest is produced.

The higher state of vigilance was due to the theft of a set of gate keys from a refinery vehicle as well as two incidents in which suspicious characters were seen snooping around. KOMO said guards at one plant reported seeing a diver in the water as well as a person in a kayak who may have been videotaping the facility.
