Heinz Kerry Recalls Death of First Husband

By RYAN J. FOLEY

Associated Press Writer

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Teresa Heinz Kerry, who inherited a vast family fortune and heads a billion-dollar foundation, said Tuesday she would give up the money to have her first husband back.

"It was a very sad day when that happened," Heinz Kerry said, speaking of Sen. John Heinz, heir to the Heinz food fortune, who was killed in a 1991 plane crash. "I'd rather have my husband alive than that money."

Heinz Kerry, a philanthropist now married to Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the Democratic presidential candidate, said she wants people to judge her by her life's work and not the size of her bank account. She and Kerry wed in 1995, the second marriage for both.

Her comments came during her first visit to the state since a win in Iowa's caucuses ignited her husband's presidential campaign last January. She spoke in the crowded, sweltering basement of a Des Moines health care clinic where she pitched his health care proposals and fielded questions about her wealth.

Addressing the suggestion that her fortune, estimated at $500 million, makes her out of touch with the voters who will decide whether to elect her husband, she said: "It's so ludicrous that it makes you laugh."

"You measure people by what they do with their lives," said Heinz Kerry, who also heads the $1.2 billion Heinz Foundation endowment, which donates money to charitable causes.

Kristin Scuderi, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Republican Party, questioned how well Heinz Kerry could connect with ordinary Iowans. "I kind of question how down to earth she is," Scuderi said.

Heinz Kerry heard from medical patients who could not afford health insurance and called for changes to the system to focus on preventive health care and provide incentives to companies that offer health insurance to employees.

Separately, Kerry told an interviewer he has "no intention" of releasing his divorce records, calling it "ancient history."

"I have no intention of doing that at all. There's no reason whatsoever. It's history, ancient history," Kerry said in an interview with Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo during a campaign stop in Phoenix. "My ex-wife and I are terrific friends, very proud of our children. We have stayed close as an extended family in a sense through those years."

Kerry said his ex-wife, Julia Thorne, sees no reason to release the records, nor do their two children.

"It's none of anybody's business. Period," he said.

I guess Kerry's nervous, since a court ruled that releasing Jack Ryan's divorce records was in the public interest. The Chicago Sun-Times sued and got them, combed over them for anything of interest, and drove him out of his political race.

I'd like to see Kerry's. After all, his political office is SOOOOO much more important than Ryan's. We should have all the information we need to make a truly informed decision. /dripping schadenfreude

I thought it was disgusting that Ryan's divorce records were allowed to be unsealed over the objections of him and his ex wife. Same for Kerry. Let it go.

But his military records shoulld be made public. This is something the public has a right to know.

Like actually WORKING for a living? Something you would know nothing about? And in case you haven't noticed, your hubby doesn't bother to show up at his job either.

While you're at it TerYaZa, can you cut me a check for the 3 grand your husband (the "man of the working class") owes me in unemployment extension benefits? Due to him being absent from his job TWICE, I did not receive this compensation. Don't worry, I won't hold my breath.

Oh, but it is our business, Mr Kerry, to determine what kind of character you are before putting you in charge. We didn't do that with Mr Clinton and found that he would rather play

I agree. Fair is fair. In this "have to know everything" society, I didn't think anything was off limits anymore. Including military secrets.

If the liberal media can stick their collective noses into every aspect of a Republican politician's life, and our military, why should Kerry be immune to such scrutiny?

Yes, I'm hoping the records are made available. Could be helpful.

I was watching FOX and Friends this morning. Someone said Kerry's ex-wife threatened to kill herself while they were married.

This makes sense. Pretty much any picture you see of her and JF'nK, she seems to be cringing away from him touching her.

Compare and contrast:

And you are to quit your Senate seat to show that you have the courage to rise up to a challenge with nothing to fall back on except your moral fortitude and beliefs.

And $500 Mil of Teresa's money. Has Kerry ever held any kind of job outside of elected office?

Although she doesn't have the dignity and grace of First Lady Bush (either one of them), I think all the nasty remarks about Teresa are uncalled for.

Considering the social strata she was raised in, I think she TRIES to be a good person. Too bad some of her understanding of life is a little skewered. Also, I don't think she's ugly. She looks really good for an old woman. With the advantage of botox, she has managed to keep a remembrance of her youthful prettiness.

I feel sorry for her. Something I don't have ONE OUNCE of for that clintoon woman. And that certainly holds true for that THING Kerry.

After who she was married to the first time, she must CRINGE when she has to go to bed with that THING. At least her body language seems to indicate that she holds a distaste for Kerry. God help her!

Great, so now John Kerry loses a popularity contest with his wife between himself and a dead guy.

There was somebody who lost a Senate race to a dead guy by proxy (well to his widow) back in 2000 I believe. Pretty sad, maybe the voters were sending a message. As far as Kerry...he'd be an idiot to think she stopped caring for her first husband the moment she married Kerry. You can't just turn that kind of thing off and on at the flick of a switch (well some people can - like Hillary).

I wonder how this makes John Kerry feel. LOL

He doesn't care as long as he gets money out of the deal.

I think Teresa is hilarious. I like to think that if my guy ever ran for President, I'd be as outspoken and devil-may-care as she is.

Considering the Heinz Foundation has given gobs of money to anti-American, leftwing and/or radical Muslim "charitable causes," what does that make her "measure"?
