Attorney General John Ashcroft reiterated Tuesday his warning that terrorists intend to attack the United States and that the upcoming Fourth of July holiday and political conventions should be considered prime targets.
"We are a nation at war," Ashcroft said. "There are times when 9-11 may seem like a distant memory, but it is not. Al-Qaida wants to hit us and hit us hard."
Ashcroft said the nation is entering a "season of symbolic events" that might become terrorist targets. While not wanting the public to be fearful and not enjoy the upcoming holiday, he urged people to be vigilant.
He said the changes made by the Patriot Act in the years since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks gave government agencies the ability to share information, but investigators still need additional powers.
Civil liberties groups have challenged the Patriot Act, saying it weakens judicial review and other checks to law enforcement's surveillance and investigative powers.
Ashcroft argued that law enforcement needs more powers, not fewer. Among those he cited is the power for investigators to subpoena business records in terrorism investigations on their own rather than through a grand jury and a federal death penalty for some terrorism attacks in which people are killed.

OR they have decided to choose a side.
To Atty. General Ashcroft: If you have something specific to share with us, please do so - if not, knock it off with the 'boy who cried wolf' routine. Even the sheeple have grown complacent with these 'non events'.
We going to pay for the bus ride back to the border also? I welcome Mexicans that are here legally but these people are breaking our laws. I suggest a 6 month prison sentence (male or female) first.
Fingers crossed here that nothing happens, but it might just take this to remind and wake people up to the fact we ARE still at war.
Oops (red faced) How did that happen? Wrong thread. Sorry:')
I don't doubt that Al Qaida will try to hit us again, but these unspecific warnings, what are they all about? What can we really do besides BOTLO.
Sure
. hell it isn't like the administration hasn't been raked over the coals for 3 years because they didn't WARN US THE FIRST TIME.
on a side topic, coast guard announced that beginning thursday they will board every ship entering American port to "check" compliance with regulations....

You must understand serious of situation. Irak has it is own free government, terrorist lost advantage, what do you think they will try to concentrate on? Today there was problem in Germany. This is not a simple smile. America must protect it self with all its power, we will be behind you to help America as a ally and true friend.
No problem.
I personally think we should secure the border to make it virtually impossible to get through. I consider that far more effective and sensible, than to let them in, then try to locate them and return them from inside the US.
I've done that before. Multiple threads running at the same time. It's easy to do.
My follow-up is still valid!
This is one place where we don't want any fireworks on the Fourth.
Well, if he doesn't do this, then they'll whine he didn't warn us.
Is Streisand planning another farewell tour?
