Michael Moore, MoveOn, and Fahrenheit 9/11
National Review ^ | 06/29/04 | Byron York

A political campaign disguised as a movie.

The left-wing activist group MoveOn.org, which last week launched a campaign to encourage members to see Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 during its premiere weekend, is now taking partial credit for the early success of the anti-Bush documentary.

"Due in part to your efforts, Fahrenheit 9/11 was the number one movie in the nation this weekend," Eli Pariser, head of the MoveOn Political Action Committee, told supporters during a nationwide conference call Monday night. "Now we're going to talk about how to turn that enormous momentum into action to beat Bush."

Last week, MoveOn asked members to sign a pledge to see Fahrenheit 9/11 during its first showings Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Announcing the plan, Pariser praised the movie, but said the real reason MoveOn wanted members to turn out during the film's first days in theaters was to create the impression that a wave of anti-Bush anger was sweeping the country. "We launched this campaign around Fahrenheit 9/11 because to the media, the pundits, and the politicians in power, the movie's success will be seen as a cultural referendum on the Bush administration and the Iraq war," Pariser told MoveOn members. "Together, we have an opportunity to knock this ball out of the park."

Fahrenheit 9/11 took in $21.8 million at the box office during its first few days in theaters, making it the most popular movie of the weekend.

Moore himself joined the MoveOn conference call Monday night, which organizers say included 55,000 listeners. The filmmaker thanked MoveOn members for helping make Fahrenheit 9/11 a quick success. But more than success, Moore told MoveOn, he wanted the movie to help defeat President George W. Bush in November. "None of us want this just to be a movie, where people just eat some popcorn and go home," Moore said. Instead, Moore explained, he wanted the movie to become the inspiration for thousands of new anti-Bush voters.

"I've actually put up a little pledge sheet on my website," Moore said, referring to a list of get-out-the-vote strategies he is endorsing for the presidential election. The first thing Moore is asking people to do is to take off work on November 2, so they can spend part of the day helping others get to the polls. The second thing is "to take one weekend in October and drive to a swing state" to work for Democratic candidate John Kerry. Finally, Moore is "asking everyone to identify five non-voters that they know and adopt them," to convince them to vote.

The MoveOn meetings underscored the overtly political nature of Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 promotional campaign.

Last week, MoveOn set a goal of persuading 100,000 members to take the pledge to see Fahrenheit 9/11 as early as possible. In fact, according to MoveOn, 116,649 MoveOn members signed up. While that number seems like a relatively small part of the movie's total audience, Pariser says MoveOn's influence is far larger than the official number suggests. "When I went to Waterville, Maine and asked how many people from MoveOn were there, probably three-quarters of the people there said yes," Pariser told Variety on Monday.

Why do you assume Kerry will be on the ticket? The Democrats are better served if his plane crashes and someone -- say -- Hillary reluctantly takes his place. Of course everyone will secretly think that Bush caused the plane to crash.

That might be absurd but they've done it three times.

take off work on November 2, so they can spend part of the day helping others get to the polls.

So they can vote early, and often.

absurd would be putting it beyond them. she's waiting til 08 though, I'm pretty much sure of it now.

she wants kerry to lose, wants the dims to stay out of power a little longer, that way she looks like the savior (if she wins) in 08.

man, that's a scary thought.

And their second option would be...?

Actually, I've got to give them credit--they're probably the best turd-polishers I've ever seen.

Sure one can do this. Billy klinton did it, twice. And hitlery with her 'listening campaign' for the senate seat in NY did it.

You see, it is EASY to do this when ALL of the major networks, NBC,CBS,NBC and CNN along with various print media and seriously sick people like hollywood creeps and trolls like Mikey Moore support your agenda....the free propaganda, tho destructive to America, makes hiding very easy.

Remember Kerry's use of the word FUCK in print media vs Cheney saying it in private to hollings during the congressional formal photo session? Remember juanita broaddrick's RAPE allegations? Remember yesterday....WHEN IRAQ RECEIVED ITS POWER??

Oh yeah...you can hide when the press works as Hitler's press corp did...whereas every single gaff made by a Republican is front and center news.

I have never been more sick of the leftist press.

I cannot even read the words of the org MOVEON.org without thinking of billy klinton boinking Monica in our Oval Office.

Such a revolting visual. So degrading to our symbol of dignity, strength and power....a president running after girls just out of teenagehood, seeking to satisfy sexual desires 'because he could!!!! Ew.

Moveon.org sprung from a group led by norman lear in hollyweird and pushed by the clinton's, as ann lewis worked on it furiously from OUR WHITE HOUSE, to get American to MOVE ON from the sticky, oogey thoughts of bill clinton screwing and molesting and attacking women, of his abusing his power to lure women for his personal gratification...including prior accusations of RAPE.

Impeachment was upon them, it happened, they mocked it, laughed at klinton's zipper problems and told us we should MOVE ON.

WE did. Right to 9/11.

Our media protected him...and now they are trying to dispirit American over the immense accomplishments of this administration.

MOVEON.ORG = MONICA on her knees. Yuck.

It is time to hold the advertisers of the major networks news programs accountable. It is time to work towards mobilization.

Our nation is suffering from a lack of knowledge, thanks to leftist ethical actions. Not telling the full story is akin to telling a lie-when reporting news to the American people.

Basically Hillary has until 2006 to hide the bodies and 2008 to blame the Republicans for it.

Although she does have her war chest ready now and will bring back the moderates. She is strangely absent lately and I think is riding fast and furious under the radar looking for that opening to attack.

My question is, why is the "intellectual right so late to the party". They have scorned "media bashing" because it involves their friends in elite NY and DC circles. Even Rush, in the past, has said, "it is useless to complain about the media".

Well look where it has gotten them. Nowhere, but on the brink of losing a war, and losing one of the boldest Presidents in history.

In their efforts to defeat the left intellectually, they have left one flank wide open.

They are snookered over and over again. The right-wing press is great, but they know not how to fight.

For 40 years the leftists have ruled our country, the international debate, our culture, our policies and pols who make decisions according to the NYT, they run our schools, our courts and our only sources of information and history.

We must coordinate their defeat, and we should have started planning yesterday.

Our enemy is not the left, but those who promote them.

I'll ask this one question. Where has the "Summer of Bill Clinton" gone? It lasted all of one week. I just finished making a number of airline trips for business. Clinton books everywhere, but no one is looking, much less buying. Why? The majority of Americans have his number. He is toast! And...the same will become of Michael Moore and his movie. Lots of bucks for Michael, but no impact. You can bank on it! Just remember, that any movie that does not increase its revenue on Saturday over Friday does not have great and long legs. The America haters turned out in droves, and all they did was make Michael Moore rich! End of story. Let us see what happens over the next three or four weeks!

For 40 years the leftists have ruled our country, the international debate, our culture, our policies and pols who make decisions according to the NYT, they run our schools, our courts and our only sources of information and history.

It goes back a lot further than that. The liberalism has been there, under various guises, since before the Pharisees convicted Christ, by breaking their own rules, and introducing perjurers. There were heretics down the centuries, who adopted the same tactics. The Protestants, and to those here who are it's the fact, adopted the same. Political correctness was practiced in earnest by the Anglican Church in persecution of not just Catholics, but virtually all other denominations, in an era where virtually everything was subject to capital punishment, in the worst way. They gave way to 'humanism', and Revolution. And the Revolutionaries brought up Marx, and Lenin, while they proceeded on parallel fronts. The radicalism of today is just the same, in the similar guise, but spread around the world because of the 'global village'. The left has 'ruled' - forever, except where put down by Christendom. The secular/religious split is really the profound one, not that between Dem/Rep, or liberal/conservative, though the overlap is obvious. Just my attempt at slight soundbyte of historical perspective.

Moore told MoveOn, he wanted the movie to help defeat President George W. Bush in November.

would this count as a political ad which would fall under the Election Campaigning Rules that has been touched upon lately? Therefore, the movie can be suspended til after the elections? then again, moore would immediately put this on VHS/DVD distribution.

Agreed, but the infiltration of the Humanities and Social Science, in this country for the last 50 years is profound.

It has taught us to emote on cue, and our critical and logical thinking skills are nill.

I doubt most Americans even see the secular/religious split anymore.

They have been bombarded with our media and entertainment culture telling us what to think and how to speak for so long, that most actually fear "offending" someone.

How we raise our children is the most profound and dangerous trend, from our Medical community, our churches, government and schools.

Parents no long follow common sense or gut instincts, for fear of reprisal from Oprah, teachers, ie "society".

We need a new revolution to release us from the grip of the elites in NY, DC, and Hollywood.

Any truth to the report I heard on the radio that the libs in Hollywood bumped up the release of Spiderman 2 to keep the traffic on Moore and artificially inflate attendance?

My department's secretary participated in this conference call. I just heard her in the office saying she went to a house party, where she sat in on a conference call with Moore. Yes, she's a real dope.

Didn't Kerry's current wife do the same trick?

Actually, sabotaging private airplanes to effectuate corporate asset transfers is a well practiced art.

Bet John F stays out of small private planes as a matter of habit.
