Democrats Tap Open Source (Linux)

Open source has expanded into the political world, with open software powering the online operations of the Democratic National Committee and Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign.

The DNC has embraced open source to run its online operation, including outreach and fund raising, and has been working on this front since 2001 with New York-based consultant Plus Three LP.

This week, the DNC will launch, at www.democrats.org, the third version of its Web site, which is designed to mobilize voters on a national and grass-roots level, grow the party's online database, and raise funds, said David Brunton, Plus Three's vice president and co-founder.

Plus Three's Arcos technology, a business application suite based on the open-source LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and Perl) platform, lies at the core of the Democrats' online technology infrastructure, dubbed Demzilla by the DNC.

WE know you don't read all of the "evidence" that you insist on linking. From the Calif effort:

"The law does not forbid the production of proprietary software;

The law does not forbid the sale of proprietary software;

The law does not dictate which software to use;

The law does not dictate the supplier from whom software will be bought;

and The law does not limit the terms under which software can be licensed.

The legislative intent is that for software to be acceptable to the State it is not enough that it is technically capable of fulfilling a task, but that the contractual conditions for purchase and/or licensing must satisfy a series of requirements regarding the license. Without such requirements the State cannot guarantee its citizens adequate processing of its data, watching over its integrity, confidentiality, and accessibility throughout time, as these are very critical aspects for the software's normal functioning.

I think this is also something that US users are interested in also. Most licenses as released with the software contain all sorts of conditions that many disagree with. We're tired of having to submit to serfdom by agreeing to much of this BS from the Overlords. If you are concerned as to why people don't give a rat's ass for the US software industry, spend a day reading the (non-negotiated) licenses. That the larger customers (e.g. gov'ts) have reached a similar conclusion is not hard to imagine.

YOU need to reform the industry you care so much about before it's too late. To expect the rest of us to continue the corporate welfare state that we are currently in is ridiculous. Clean house or it will be cleaned for you. Get off the welfare now.

Open source operating systems and software are there to be used by anyone, even people whom you may philosophically disagree with.

And handed to our enemies for free, to be used against us...

So if I use Linux I'm a commie and if I use a Mac I'm a fag?

Yes and maybe.

The law does not forbid the production of proprietary software

Only because people like me stand in the way, and made them retreat from their original intent. Good thing, since if it was up to many of you, Linux legislation would coast through. Probably will one day, with your undying blessing.

Not everyone who hates Microsoft is communist or socialist, but you have to wonder, since all communists and socialists do.

As long as it's not GPL that would be fine with me too. Use Apple, use any version of Unix, there's plenty of non-Linux alternatives available for the non-Microsoft buyer, all of which originated in the US, bring dollars back into this country, and can't be legally renamed "Chinese Red Flag".

You're forgetting BSD (which is also the basis for OS X) is also free to be used by the Chinese. You seem to not like the communists getting this technology because it harms our national security, but it's okay if American companies make money off of it.

BSD is crude, can barely support dual processor pc's if at all. IBM won't be pumping it up either, putting some of their best tech into it since it could easily end up in other versions of Unix. A bogus analogy, especially in the here and now. When China cracks the top 10 in supercomputers with BSD, be sure and let me know.

The ability to design and manufacture advanced circuitry could very well enhance Chinese weapons development, but as long as MS makes some money off of it, you MS Fluff Girls will look the other way and scream "linux!"

LOL, your position is absurd to claim "colour TV" circuitry is used to design, develop and analyze advanced weapons like the nuclear missles currently pointed at the US and our allies. They don't even need the circuitry anyway, companies like IBM sell them the necessary computer hardware, and companies like Red Hat GIVE them the needed software. Once again, despite your cries, Microsoft isn't even in the picture, while you continue to try to protect those that obviously are.

You said use any version of UNIX. BSD is UNIX and can be taken and renamed by the Chinese. They can take the OS and put SMP code in it just as Apple did with Darwin, which is an SMP version of BSD and is the core of OS X. It is also available for free download, under a GPL-like license. But you don't mind that because Apple makes money off of giving stuff to the Chinese. I guess you wouldn't mind Boeing selling a bunch of F-15s to China or Iran either, hey, we're making money off it so it must be okay. That line of argument just doesn't work.

Someone on another thread claimed that M$ IE was "a sewerpipe to your hard drive" - LOL.

That's the best way of summarizing IE that I've ever heard!

Let's see, advanced cameras with monitors on the missiles during testing, cameras with monitors on aircraft to launch sight-guided missiles, AWACS, etc.

Like I already said, if/when they ever do it, especially develop a top 10 supercomputer on it, let me know. There's very little chance it will ever happen, so till then, you're only distracting from the present danger of here and now. I can only guess what motivates you people to do such.
