There are unconfirmed reports that a soldier from the Tri-State kidnapped in April in Iraq (news - web sites) has been killed, WLWT has learned.
Pfc. Matt Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, a member of the 724th Transportation Company, was captured April 9. His convoy was attacked by gunmen using rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons.
According to military representatives close to the Maupin family who spoke to WLWT, sources are reporting that the Al Jazeera TV network has a videotape of Maupin being shot.
The military has not changed Maupin's status, and the report of his death has not been confirmed.
A tape showing Maupin being held by guerillas was released about a week after Maupin was reported missing.
Additional details are forthcoming.

Everybody...and I mean everybody...coming and going from their office has got to be shadowed, 24/7, until the conduit to the murderers is established.

DAMN!!!!!
Wouldn't necessarily help. If it's a digital video, it can be e-mailed/FTP'd in. This may actually be a legitimate use for Carnivore/Echelon.
My son was just asking me two days ago if I had heard anything about Matt Maupin, he's says we get news better and quicker than they do in Iraq. My son Steve knows him as a fellow member of the 724th..
I just pinged proudarmymom with this sad news. Her son also in the 724th returned home wounded and is being treated for possible nerve damage from taking an AK 47 round in his right shoulder. Prayers for him as well.
ABC News employees told 9News there is a videotape of Maupin being shot in the back of the head...

The Tri-state is on edge about the status of a captured local soldier, after news came early Monday morning that he may be dead.
9News heard nothing about the status of Pfc. Matt Maupin, 20, since this videotape a released a week after maupin was taken hostage.
Then, just after 5 a.m. Monday, 9News received a phone call from ABC News saying Maupin had been executed. At this hour, the military-family spokesperson said he has no official confirmation on Maupin's status.
ABC News employees told 9News there is a videotape of Maupin being shot in the back of the head, but 9News has not seen that videotape.
Maupin was taken hostage in Iraq 80 days ago.
Two Army officers are posted at the home of Keith and Carolyn Maupin Monday, shielding the family from the media and answering all phone calls. Two Union Township police officers are outside the home, keeping unwanted visitors away.
The Maupin's driveway on Schoolhouse Road remains full of cars presumably owned by friends and family members who have stopped by to lend support.
Monday's word of Maupin's status coincides with the US handover of sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government, which took place two days earlier than expected.
Maupin, a member of the 724th Transportation Company and a Glen Este High School graduate, was captured April 9 after his convoy was attacked. A videotape of Maupin's capture was released in mid-April.

Sad Ping
Prayers for Matt, his family, those who loved him, and those who were working so hard to find him in time.
Executed ? Murder more like it.
Wasn't this when it was announced we had the handover.........they did it being spiteful.
My thoughts too. I figured since the coalition managed to pull off a "terror free" transfer by moving the date up, the terrorists would retaliate by killing the hostages.
My heart is breaking...for this man's family, and for the others in 724th...
Pinging the Hobbit Hole.
The gloves should have been off a long time ago. I supported going to war and I still do. What I do not support is the pathetic way in which we have gone about it.
This should not be happening and is indicative of a restrained battle plan. It's shameful.
This is sad, terrible news. I have been praying for his safe return. Matt from one Buckeye to another...May you rest peacefully in the arms of God and know that we will keep your family close in our prayers. Thank you for service and your sacrifice. You will not be forgotten.
That was precisely my first thought this morning. That there was more to the handover than just security. Nuke 'em and curse 'em to hell.
GOD BLESS AMERICA.
DEATH TO ISLAM.
Thanks to the USSC I seriously doubt if there will be many prisoners. It's far better to just kill them rather than to risk taking prisoners who will later be released by our court system to kill us.
