Possum pies and other meals made from the ubiquitous Kiwi pest have Australian animal-rights activists in a stew.
Possum dishes such as Road Kill, Headlight Delight Pie, Guess That Mess and Shovel-Flipped Roadside Pizza have incensed Animal Liberation Victoria (ALV).
President Patty Mark said New Zealanders' treatment of possums was an outrage and the culinary names "make your stomach turn".
"Possums are a treasure and ALV would see them as individuals who have their own rights."
The Kiwi behind the culinary treats, Peter Salter, dismissed the group's comments.
After cooking up the pests for customers at his pub in Pukekura, south Westland, for several years he recently started selling his possum pies at a Nelson cafe. He hopes they will soon be available in Christchurch, Queenstown and Auckland.
Salter said some Australians "haven't got a clue" about the damage caused by the animals here.
"They might be cute and fluffy over in Australia but they are certainly not cute and fluffy here.
"They (Australians) seem to think that we are a country where we have retirement farms for sheep: they just live in cuckoo land."

No, you Animal Liberation Victoria nutjob, possums are a pain in the arse (especially when they get in under the house and pee all over everything, as the ones around our place do) and the only reasons I don't get a gun and shoot the annoying little buggers is because 1. They are a protected species here, 2. I live in a residential area and would risk hitting neighbours, and 3. I don't own a gun.

Possum dishes such as Road Kill, Headlight Delight Pie, Guess That Mess and Shovel-Flipped Roadside Pizza have incensed Animal Liberation Victoria (ALV). Bwahahahhahaahha at the names. Possums must be as abundant as racoons(usual roadkill animal) here, although we have our share of possums too.
ALV? Is that any relation to the terrorist group Animal Liberation Front here?
I'm still waiting for the save the weasel campaign, let alone save the rat, yellow jacket, carpenter ant, termite, deer fly and mosquito campaigns.

They stink, and there isn't enough bar-b-q sauce in the world to make them edible.

,,, maybe we should ask the NSW tree huggers why kangaroos can be taken out no problem at all. We see those as your national symbol, much like the kiwi is ours.
We've got over 70 million possums and they chew thru so much native bush each night... it's amazing.

possums are a pain Any species which single-handedly tries to disprove evolution can't be all bad.

ALV? Is that any relation to the terrorist group Animal Liberation Front here? ,,, must be, I guess - it's some Aussie would-be PETA crowd.
The possums in New Zealand aren't the same as the ones in the US.

Any species which single-handedly tries to disprove evolution can't be all bad. And you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.
They are succeding because they are pretty good at adapting to changing environments.
