Muttly want!

Well, if you be a good dog and do your daily duty faithfully upon the New York Times, Fester will put in a good word for you with Santa Claus.

"My, isn't talk cheap."

Only for fools and cowards - like yourself?

It is a bit difficult to build and launch model rockets when I live in dense forested hills Hot Springs National Park.

They do tend to frown on rockets flying through the forests - especially in summer.

If I still lived west of Houston - in the flatlands I guarantee I would STILL be firing them off and hoping to find them on the way back down.

You must have led a terrible life - never having played with rockets ,or cherry bombs, or ash cans, etc.

Do you have some type of search program that ranks posts by the degree or type of freedom being infringed to select which ones to weigh in on???

So in other words we can just dismiss your Patrick Henry speech as blustery bravado.

With the exception of "professional" rocketeering and not the occasional hobbyist, I assume you'd have to be licensed to play with the big stuff. However,

"Yeah, they should should be licensed and registered. This isn't stuff that you'd want some drunk teenagers doinking with."

I will have to remind others of another wonderful liberal tagline to proceed any threat to individual liberty.

Ask yourself, just how hard would it be to build a rocket and take down an airliner.

Unless you are up to building a steerable rocket airframe with control surfaces, acutators, a radar or IR imaging system, and a control system that moves the control surfaces correctly to steer the rocket to a target... it would be real real real hard.

I'll stick to building my own nuclear reactor.

Or, compare it to the threat of home-made RPGs. There aren't any. Even though RPGs have no guidance system, and are meant for targets hundreds, and not thousands, of feet away. The ATF is fighting phantasms.

"I guess a budding boy terrorist could build his own mini bazooka with something like that."

It's all my fault. When I was a kid I drilled a 1/8" hole in the head end of those and glued a cherry bomb there. Stuck zinc dust and sulfur and a fuse in the other end and put it in a pipe for aiming. Stupid bored kid stuff:)

I'm talking about an airliner in a landing/takeoff pattern, low, slow and straight. Can't be that hard.

Try hitting a moving car with a model rocket. It is that hard. A plane is much farther away, even on approach, and going 5X faster.

The only documented incidences of bringing down aircraft with unguided, unsteered rockets is bringing down hovering or slow-moving helicopters with barrages of RPGs.

Oh, and if you manage to build a rocket that has a snowball's chance of hitting an airplane, you still have to build a payload that would damage the plane enough to crash it. THAT is a whole 'nother artform.

Ever read up on SAM warheads? You would have to build and explode dozens of them just to arrive at a sort-of working design. And you would have to have the high-speed strobe movie cameras used for that kind of analysis. Much much much cheaper to buy a SAM on the black market, and you would literally have three orders of magnitude higher probablity of success.

There is ZERO practical chance of a homebrew SAM working. The ATF should be forced to lay off everyone involved in this gravy train scam and rebate the taxpayers out of their next several budgets.

I do see the point in keeping everything unregulated...

When I was young, I used to play with things that go boom (I haven't heard the word "ashcan" in years).

You guys are right....be very careful about the approval of regulations and licensing -- these requirements chip away little by little.

Baltodog growls when someone calls him liberal, though.

Didn't mean to start a flame war. Next time, let's stick with something safe, like gardening (BTW, I'll put my cukes and 'maters up against anyone's, anyday).

Yeah, they should should be licensed and registered.

I'll agree only if the license is to shove a "G" motor up an ATF officer's rear orifice and try to make him go supersonic!

(Now that's a challenge, those guys are far from aerodynamic ;-)

Why bother? A bakers' dozen box cutters and an inattentive security apparatus were all it took to do the trick on 9/11.
