ANKARA (AFP) Jun 23, 2004

Turkish border guards have seized guns, hand grenades, mines and explosives in a tanker truck which entered the country from Iraq, a senior local official said Wednesday.

The Turkish driver of the vehicle was detained and police launched an investigation into the incident, the deputy governor of the southeastern border province of Sirnak, Resul Celik, told Anatolia news agency.

The cache, discovered in the truck after it entered Turkey from the Habur crossing point, included 28 firearms -- among them 20 Kalashnikov rifles and four Kanas-type rifles usually used in assassinations -- as well as "a great number" of hand grenades, mines, bullets and explosives, Celik said.

Last month, police in the region seized some 100 guns and thousands of bullets hidden in three trucks carrying wheat from Iraq, which were thought to have been destined for sale at the underground market.

Turkish security forces are on high alert ahead of a NATO summit in Istanbul next week, which US President George W. Bush will attend.

Southeastern Turkey has been the scene of a bloody Kurdish rebellion for self-rule. The rebels ended a five-year unilateral ceasefire with Ankara June

Sounds like the terrorists are in retreat and shipping their weapons to the next battleground.

I wish President Bush was not going to Turkey. It's just too dangerous and too difficult to protect him. The terrorists only have to get lucky once.

It might turn out to be an arms shipment to the Kurds - from the Kurds.

Tanker trucks have openings on top dude. You can get down inside those things. You can put someone inside and stack stuff in them. Check it out before you post dumb stuff.

Today, the Turks found a car packed with explosives, and a (separately hidden )remote control detonator in a long-term parking deck at Istanbul Int'l. Airport.

Police suspect a Marxist/Leninist group ,Kurdish separatists, and Islamic militants in about that order.

(Anybody who thinks Communism has died out, needs to re-think the problem. They've just re-grouped.Mention this to some of our "liberal" brethren and they'll say you are being "hateful and divisive".)

Keep your thoughts and prayers for our president as he attends the summit. We don't want a terrorist attack on our president at a time like this.

I have never seen or heard of these "Kanas-type rifles usually used in assassinations".

Has anyone else?

Surprise, surprise. Why in the world does Bush have to show up at these tea parties? Okay, so Nato is coming around, finally, to at least helping to train Iraqi forces on the ABC's of protecting their country, but most of these same countries work night and day stabbing us in the back. They're scoring brownie points with the anti-American crowds back home, of course. But what will they do if push comes to shove and we have to get serious about the war on terror and the axis of evil? When we unleash technological weapons they can't even imagine, let alone manufacture. I suppose it will be more evidence of how mean we are. (While we're saving the world's collective arse.)
