ENNIS, Ireland President George W. Bush was set to arrive at the heavily guarded Dromoland Castle in County Clare on Friday night as the authorities braced for what were expected to be large demonstrations across Ireland against the U.S. occupation of Iraq.In contrast to the jubilant welcomes accorded to Presidents Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and John F. Kennedy, Bush's reception was already developing as frosty, if not outright hostile. Widespread opposition to the Iraq war and revulsion at the Abu Ghraib prison scandal have turned a large portion of Irish popular opinion against him.
Big protests were expected in Dublin and in Shannon, where Air Force One was to land before Bush headed to the EU-U.S. summit at Dromoland Castle. Smaller protests were expected for the cities of Galway, Sligo, Waterford and Tralee in County Kerry.
"Fury and fear as town is turned into a fortress," said the headline in the Irish Examiner. The newspaper quoted the mayor of Shannon as saying that the town's residents were being made into potential targets for a terrorist attack.
Mary O'Rourke, leader of the Irish Senate, refused to attend a recent dinner in celebration of Bush's impending visit at the home of the American ambassador, James Kenny, out of objections to American prison policy at Guantánamo Bay and Abu Ghraib, and for going to war with Iraq, she said. . "Nobody denies we have an affinity with the United States, but that is a different matter from having an affinity with the president," O'Rourke said in the Irish Parliament this week.
But the centrist Irish Independent said in an editorial Friday that while Bush's trip would be the equivalent for the protesters of "a visit from the Devil Incarnate," the demonstrations "seem a bit out of touch."

So was the era that these Irish men died for wearing green, was under Christian rule?
Carole Coleman interview on RTE: Typical of a 3rd world left-wing socialist. Could not have proven any better, than that there are still supporters of Adolph and Joe alive and well in Europe. The gene pool must be getting lower than I observed while I lived over 12 years in Europe. Only hope is that the new Europe will infuse a measure of civility and new genes into an old decrepit socialist region that continues to fall further and further into the abyss of the 3rd world.
BTW, as early as the "930"'s ce a Saxon king (Athelstan, I believe) had united so much of the entire island under his rule that he was called "King of Britain."
And Scotland plotted against England just as England plotted against Scotland (France was a traditional ally). In 1513 Scotland invaded England and their king (who led the invasion) was killed. Has anyone ever heard of that little battle, huh? No . . . I didn't think so.
So, that attack by the Scotts wasn't a revengeful act?
Were the Irish/Scottish victimized or not?

It was an act egged on by the French for their own reasons. Unless you believe they were still sore about Athelstan.
Again, the lowland Scots are Angles, not Celtic Scots, and they were there a hundred years before the Scots were. So how come you condemn the English for "invading" everyone but not the Scots for invading northern Scotland and taking it from the Picts? Why aren't you crusading against the evil Scots for invading Pictland?
Even the Irish are not "indigenous." They took their "sacred motherland" from another people who preceded them, as all peoples have done since spreading out from Babylon after the Tower of Babel.
Okay, the English are the only evil people in the universe and were never ever victimized by anyone else at any time. Everyone in the world who isn't Anglo-Saxon is entitled to an independent, sovereign, ethnically pure Mystical Motherland with which it is connected by a mystical racial "folk soul."
Anglo-Saxons, on the other hand, are not allowed to have a mystical homeland anywhere on earth and must forever roam among the pure innocent little victims they have oppressed and hear how terrible they are and how beautiful and innocent everyone else is. I'd use the word "Telmarine," but you don't seem educated enough (perhaps you are very young) to recognize the word.
Pour on some more guilt. Isn't that what conservative messageboards are for, to champion mystical national ethnic mystical nationalism for everyone on earth other than Anglo-Saxons and to run them down for their irredeemable and inherent evil?
Probably not, as we have no votes over there...so she would just ignore it. You are right, waste of time.
So does that kind of give Ireland any reason at all the feel the way they do toward a President who would attack a country instead of secretly going in and removing that which attacked us?
I know he tried to keep from killing off alot of possible innocents. Yet we went into that country, that never bothered us, just their Mafia attacked us! I mean, we used the excuse to kill Saddam Hussein, just so we could know for sure if he had weapons in those buildings.
Did you see the pictures of that man, when our soldiers found him, he was scared for his life! We play God too much, you know? We really do?
Now look, you know the Bible, in the Bible it talks about the convergence of these nations upon Israel in the end times. Now look where America has her foot? Is it really all about terrorism, or is about owning a piece of land that surrounds one side of Israel. And a major supply of oil!?
I've not studied much since high school, but they never taught me what"Telmarine," means, and thanks to you, yet another scholar of etymology, I have a new word with no meaning?!
I'm not saying that Irish are so innocent, and England is so horrid, this is what I've been taught.
But I can totally appreciate what you are saying, and hope to learn from it, and relate this back to those who have falsely taught me.
As to whether or not "the people" didn't threaten us, that is highly debatable, considering the very nature of the islamic religion. The people there are certainly not our friends, nor do I expect them to become our friends.
Most people who make these criticisms, and who support the nationalisms of various gentile nations, are avowedly anti-Israel. Please forgive my unwarranted assumption that this applied to you.
G-s's will be done.
sorry to hear you don't trust me...
Thank you for your sincerity.
"large demonstrations"
There aren't enough people in the entire country to have a really large demonstration.
I've never heard of Irishmen being killed by English for wearing green, but if it was 200 or so years ago, as you said, then it was under the rule of an Anglican Christian king.
"How do you think you'd feel to a visit from an American President if you were an Irishman?"
They kissed the a$$ of an American President named Kennedy.
Maybe that figure has something to do with the fact that the Irish gov't gives huge tax breaks to American companies that locate there and put their people to work. I don't know about all, but I do know about Mr. Don Panoz and Elan Pharmaceuticals. He certainly put a lot of Irish to work. He is, I believe from Virginia. And too, ya'll might recall that a lot of the native American lands were deeded to the new inhabitants by the natives. See Creek Indians, Chief Macintosh who was then killed by his own people for the dastardly deed. He was half Creek and half Scot. And help me remember- were'nt all the "troubles" the result of the English trying to force the Anglican church on the Catholics ? Thanks.
Very good synopsis !
Yea, what you said :-)
