Illinois Senate: Obama 54% Ryan 30%

June 25, 2004--In the race to fill a U.S. Senate seat for Illinois, Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican Jack Ryan 54% to 30%. The survey was conducted for the Daily Southtown.

Ryan has been dealing with the fallout from release of his divorce files in recent days. Many people believe he will withdraw from the race. The Daily Southtown quoted Scott Rasmussen as saying Ryan "can lose or withdraw. He's not going to the Senate."

Our previous survey found a much more competitive race (Obama 48% Ryan 40%). Since that time, Ryan's ratings have fallen from 51% favorable and 36% unfavorable (+15 net) to 41% favorable and 49% unfavorable (-8 net).

Just 29% of Illinois voters believe Ryan should withdraw from the race. If he does, however, three other Republicans appear ready to give Obama a more competitive race.

Former Governor Jim Edgar is essentially tied with Obama at this time (Obama 45% Edgar 42%).

The incumbent Senator, Peter Fitzgerald, trails Obama 47% to 40%.

Judy Baar Topinka is within 11 points of Obama, trailing 49% to 38%.

As a resident of another state I feel privileged to opine that Edgar is the best substitute. Fitzgerald has been quite the disappointment and he cannot re-engineer his image quickly enough to over come Obama. My main concern with Obama is the feeling you get from reading crap like Howard Fineman's wet kiss in the Washington Post today - the press already has Obama elected first black President of the United States! Ugh!

You're right about Edgar but with all due respect you're wrong on Fitzgerald.

He's voted with Bush on everything, but he won't play games with the State party RINO's, or play the 'trading game' in the Senate, ergo they all hate his guts.

And Fitzgerald fought tooth and nail to get an Independent Federal Prosecutor appointed to both the North and Southern Districts and they're both indicting the crooks & scum of BOTH parties at record paces.

The guy from the Northern District (Fitzgerald - no relation) is beholden to NO-ONE and has the Daley Machine quaking in their boots. Along with ex-Gov George Ryan and his criminal cronies. And in the his 'spare time' he still goes after the Outfit guys.

So IMHO, Senator Peter Fitzgerald has been just fine.

Our local conservative talk radio host also thinks Obama is a very special politician. Charismatic, etc. I'll have to pay more attention.

If the people of Illinois elect "Obama," they'll be getting exactly what they deserve.

They should wait until the last possible moment and pull a Torricelli if the polls still look bad.
