LOLLAPALOOZA, 2004 CANCELS ALL DATES
Summary, by summer: The entire tour is cancelled due to weak ticket sales.
And, the "news"
This tour -- cancelled due to lack of ticket sales (and, apparently, lack of interest) -- was headlined by Morissey. He recently made headlines around the world with his anti-Bush remarks (publicly saying he wishes it was GW instead of Reagan who had died).
TOPICS: Culture/Society; News/Current Events; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: gw; lollapalooza; morissey; moveon; music

Sonic Youth, another headline act, has also publicly made anti-Bush remarks.
So, I am wondering -- where are all these anti-Bush fans in this election year? They're not buying concert tickets for these anti-Bush entertainers. And, this is the first time this annual summer tour has been cancelled due to weak ticket sales. What gives?
Is it as simple as what goes around comes around? Or are there actually more PRO-GW Bush fans than these anti-Bush music groups believe?

What, Lollapalooza still happens?! I thought it had already been completely subjugated by Ozz-Fest and stopped existing years ago.

Morrissey is washed up, he had a good song or two when he was with The Smiths.
Beyond that--and I haven't seen the lineup of acts--today's music sucks big time.
Perhaps THAT'S why no one wanted to go.

The lineup looked pretty good this year--Flaming Lips, Pixies, Sonic Youth--all bands I'd pay to see. Perhaps the festival concept has been run into the ground. They were big in the mid/late 90s--Lollapalooza, Lilith, Horde, et al--but seem to have faded a bit.

Ridiculously, I have heard and read many liberals proclaiming the failure of the LalapaBOOZa dope-fest as the fault of the still dead economy - thus Bush's fault.
Ughhh...

I'm surprised the tour was cancelled, as the lineup is the best of any Lollapalooza. It might have been all the old school bands, or the two day format, though i'd have thought the reunited Pixies would be a big draw. Politics certainly has nothing to do with it.

People are starting to realize when Bush get`s all the criticism even though planes crash into buildings, people are beheaded and mass graves are found, something is pretty wrong with these "headliners". More like assliners if you ask me.

When have kids ever not found money to party? When has the economy ever been a factor for the leisure class, i.e. those whose entire income is spent on leisure activities and products? It never has and never will.
I suspect that Lollapalooza folded for the same reason record sales are at a record low (pardon the pun)--BECAUSE THE BANDS SUCK AND HAVE NO FOLLOWING!!!!

You are right - if the kids wanted to go, they would go.

Flaming Lips, Pixies, Sonic YouthI've seen Pixies & Sonic Youth more than once and would love to again.
However, I've never seen the Flaming Lips and would have gone to Lollapalooza just for that.

I agree it was a good lineup, but I disagree with your conclusion - I'm thinking politics really might have something to do with it. Because, think about it:
-- this particular summer festival gets unlimited free advertising on MTV and other outlets;
-- almost all these bands had new product to push during this tour - it was not a rehash of old music;
-- OTHER bands on OTHER tours ARE selling out; and
-- almost all the bands flopping on this tour have made public anti-Bush comments.
I do think politics may have played a role, though of course the promoters would never say it. Maybe people get a little tired of bands constantly bashing our nation's president in these difficult times. I know I don't want to pay money to see that, though otherwise I would like to see some of these bands.

1996 had Metallica, Ramones, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine to name a few
1992 had Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Soundgarden, Pearljam, Rage Against the Machine, STP, and others
1993 had Primus, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Fishbone, Dinosaur Jr.
This years no defunkt tour had CRAP for a lineup and thats why it bombed.

These Looza's are affiliated with moveon.org. This is great news that perhaps some of the youth is not so stupid to attend such a political hate fest! Go to the site & click on Revolution/ Solution. Good Riddance

With music, to each his/her own. I had forgotten some of the lineups, particularly the first one, with Jane's Addiction at the peak of their career. I like Metallica and the Ramones, but most of the other bands you mention are no favorites.
